With an abyss of knowledge that is yet to be discovered in neuroscience, I unquestionably see myself dedicating my future to answering currently unanswerable questions about the brain. The concept of studying the organ responsible for every individual’s life; every movement, every thought, every emotion simply fascinates me. Therefore I wish to study a BSc in Neuroscience.
My initial interest for science at GCSE led me to have a desire to further my scientific understanding by choosing to study both A-level Biology and Chemistry. A-level Biology has enhanced my awareness of how the brain is central to all life and I particularly enjoyed learning about homeostasis and the nervous system subsequently, I’m looking forward to studying modules on the nervous system in more detail and modules on memory and neural diseases when studying for my degree. Furthermore, A-level chemistry has allowed me to improve my practical skills and appreciate the importance of precision and accuracy which I hope to develop further in the Research Skills Module of the course. It involved studying the basic components of the brain, the effect of drugs on neurotransmission, the functions of the brain and how these functions are affected by disease. I found the course very useful and I feel as though it has given me the perfect introduction to the subject of neuroscience. Through the online course I was introduced to the works of Oliver Sacks. After reading ‘The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat’ I was astonished to find how many bizarre conditions can occur as a result of disturbance to the brain and I look forward to studying neuroscience to understand more clearly the reasons behind cases of brain malfunction such as those discussed in Sacks’
