The final hero of the present that will be analyzed is Neil Armstrong, who is most remembered for being the first human to ever set foot on the Moon. Some of Armstrong’s other accomplishments were his naval service and his participation in the Korean War during combat missions (Launius, 368). Armstrong was endowed with extraordinary qualities of heart and mind. He dreamed of becoming an astronaut and through perseverance and great service, he was transferred to astronaut status in 1962, only one of nine members of the second class to be chosen for space flight (Launius, 368). Each of the six heroes influenced and changed history in one way or another. The heroes were all endowed with extraordinary qualities of heart and mind, set out to achieve a near-impossible goal, and were successful in the face of opposition (Ahmed, 8). However, the heroes of the present, Ronald Reagan, Rudy Giuliani and Neil Armstrong were more influential than the heroes of the past, Joan of Arc, Christopher Columbus and Captain John Smith. Joan of Arc was actually thought to have had a mental illness, such as schizophrenia, and probably did not actually hear the voice of God. Many of the French did not believe Joan and thought she was crazy. Captain John Smith was actually believed to have embellished and falsified some of his journals describing his explorations. Smith was accused of misconduct after his attacks and mistreatment of the Native people that had helped him, even losing his leadership role in the settlement. Christopher Columbus is said to have not actually discovered the Americas because there were already people inhabiting the area. The three heroes of the present, Ronald Reagan, Rudy Giuliani, and Neil Armstrong affected millions of people and were more influential. Most people remember exactly what they were doing and where they were when Neil Armstrong first set foot on the moon. The same is true for when the twin towers were destroyed on September 11, 2001 and Rudy Giuliani’s role in helping the city and the people. "One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind," said by Neil Armstrong as he took his first steps on the moon during the NASA Apollo 11 expedition to the moon. No man has ever been to the moon before and NASA, The National Aeronautics and Space Administration, was the first to get someone to land on the moon. NASA has had many great accomplishments in exploring the "new frontier" that have affected the United States ever since it was first created in July 1958. The idea for NASA first started when the Soviet Union launched the first satellite on October 4, 1957. United States started up its own space travel program and started to work on its own projects that would be better in than the Soviet Union's. This all started the great space race. It was a big race between the Soviet Union and the United States to see who could learn and discover the most. The United States and Soviet Union started building and sending satellites and space ships. Then they tried to see who could make a suit and ship that would be able to allow a living thing to go up in space. They tested out all of the equipment with monkeys and dogs, seeing what would work. Many animals did die in the process but by the results of their testing they were able to build suits and ships that allow human beings to go up in space. Even though they were able to create these machines, that doesn't mean that they didn't have their difficulties and dangers. Two space shuttles were crashed or blown up. There were many key factors that they had learned to fix that resulted in the crashing of those ships. They have made many discoveries and accomplishments like having the first astronauts walk on the moon.
As a result of the successful mission that landed the first men on the moon, called the Apollo 11 mission, many people were inspired to provide commentary on this landing. Although these texts describe unique individual purposes about this landing, they all effectively support their purposes through the use of several rhetorical devices.
The following four texts apart of the Culminating Activity were all related to the Apollo 11 mission in 1969, which had first put a man on the moon. The first article was from the Times of London, and served to describe the events of the moon landing from the astronaut's point of view. The article used anecdotal evidence to describe Aldrin and Armstrong's experience in order to inform the audience of what had occurred, as well as the reactions in several different countries.. The speaker is a from a reputable news source, The Times, and is informing the European audience - as this event was apart of America’s space program, NASA - of the landing as a great success. Ronald Reagan was a true hero to many Americans. He was a strong president who cared for this country dearly, and Reagan really proved this by his actions during his presidency. He also proved his love for country by serving in the U.S Army during World War II. Ronald Reagan also came through as a hero by fixing the American Economy that was heading for disaster just like today’s. If you can reflect on what he had accomplished throughout his administration you can clearly see why he was a popular two term president. When you read this passage you will find that Ronald Reagan took on many challenges that shaped his legacy, and why many people consider him a hero .
Americans view Christopher Columbus and George Washington as heroes because of their perseverance. Both of these men helped pave the way for the “American Dream” that has been worked towards throughout history. Christopher Columbus helped open the door to American exploration and essentially found the location of the future American civilization, and George Washington was the first official Commander and Chief of the newly independent nation that is known as the United States of America. These two men could have given up when times were tough or when someone told them they would not be successful, but they continued to prosper and overcame a multitude of obstacles to prove themselves to the world. Looking back at their failures and accomplishments are a major piece in understanding the history of America. There are many heroes that have emerged overtime, Washington and Columbus being two of them, that have had to overcome obstacles before they achieved the goals that we praise them for today.
What defines a hero? Is it the amount of courage and individual has that makes them a hero? Could a person become known as a hero simply from their achievement? Are noble qualities required of a person that is considered to be hero? The definition of a hero lies in the eye of the beholder. In my eyes, Hershel ‘Woody’ Williams displayed amazing courage, accomplished outstanding achievements, and had noble qualities, and that is why I believe that Hershel “Woody” Williams was a true hero.
Christopher Columbus first set off on his first exploration in 1492. With all of his explorations, he has made American history by far amazing. Columbus changed American history and if he didn’t set sail, our world and the place we live would be much different. Not only did he sail off to hopefully find new land, it all started with him wanting to find new riches to make his land richer and accomplish more. What his explorations found, and what happened on the explorations are my main focus. The points that are given are what make Christopher Columbus, a hero.
Among the many flaws American history textbooks have, one that stands out above the rest is heroification. Heroification is, according to Loewen "A generative process that makes people over into heroes.”(pg.19) Through heroification national heroes such as Christopher Columbus are always portrayed as perfect individuals, with only the best intentions and absolutely no flaws. Textbooks use heroification to inspire, and instate a sense of national pride in students. Though it may instate a sense of national pride in students, it does not present the truth. Heroification leaves out important details of these "heroes" lives, and only presents trivial melodramatic details. By doing this students will never really fully understand why our "heroes" did what they did, and will never know the truth.
My topic this year is “ The Forgotten Hero: Michael Collins and the first voyage to the moon”. This topic came about when I was looking up one of the most famous astronauts of all times Neil Armstrong. I researched the members of Apollo 11 and notice a third astronaut, Michael Collins, whom I have never heard about. Although he was part of the Apollo 11 crew, he is not well-known or recognized for his accomplishments. In my eyes, Michael Collins is a forgotten hero. For this reason, I wanted to acknowledge his contributions to space exploration. My mission is to raise awareness to forgotten heroes, like Michael Collins and therefore selected his as the topic of my National History Day paper.

“That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” It was July 20 1969, the day that reshaped our nation and gave us unparalleled dreams for the future. The impact of the day goes far beyond our pride and nationalism; that day would change space exploration and technology forever. Just like a shooting star, that day would give us a glimpse of hope. A chance to see an event so breathtaking and defying, it would be man’s greatest accomplishment in the 20th century. As millions of people watched from their TV sets, a rush of euphoria came over the nation as Neil Armstrong stepped foot on the surface of the moon. It was the first time in the history of mankind that we would step on the surface of another celestial body. John F. Kennedy dared us to dream, he inspired the nation to reach for the moon, to set ourselves apart from the rest of the world. The Space Race was symbolic of many things. Our future as the technically dominate nation was secured in place; just as secure as Old Glory would be, when she was driven down into the soil of the moon. We not only reached the moon, we conquered it as a nation; united.
Neil Armstrong once said, “One small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind,” (Kurin 533). Neil spoke those words as he took the first steps on the moon. The United States may remember those words and Neil more than they do the spacesuit that Neil wore on his trip to the moon. If it were not for the spacesuit that Neil wore, there would not have even been a trip to the moon. The most important part of the entire trip to the Moon was the spacesuit. Even though Neil Armstrong’s spacesuit may not be as famous as the man who wore it, it still brought technological advancement to the future, and helpful ways to stay alive on an unknown planet.
