The final hero of the present that will be analyzed is Neil Armstrong, who is most remembered for being the first human to ever set foot on the Moon. Some of Armstrong’s other accomplishments were his naval service and his participation in the Korean War during combat missions (Launius, 368). Armstrong was endowed with extraordinary qualities of heart and mind. He dreamed of becoming an astronaut and through perseverance and great service, he was transferred to astronaut status in 1962, only one of nine members of the second class to be chosen for space flight (Launius, 368). Each of the six heroes influenced and changed history in one way or another. The heroes were all endowed with extraordinary qualities of heart and mind, set out to achieve a near-impossible goal, and were successful in the face of opposition (Ahmed, 8). However, the heroes of the present, Ronald Reagan, Rudy Giuliani and Neil Armstrong were more influential than the heroes of the past, Joan of Arc, Christopher Columbus and Captain John Smith. Joan of Arc was actually thought to have had a mental illness, such as schizophrenia, and probably did not actually hear the voice of God. Many of the French did not believe Joan and thought she was crazy. Captain John Smith was actually believed to have embellished and falsified some of his journals describing his explorations. Smith was accused of misconduct after his attacks and mistreatment of the Native people that had helped him, even losing his leadership role in the settlement. Christopher Columbus is said to have not actually discovered the Americas because there were already people inhabiting the area. The three heroes of the present, Ronald Reagan, Rudy Giuliani, and Neil Armstrong affected millions of people and were more influential. Most people remember exactly what they were doing and where they were when Neil Armstrong first set foot on the moon. The same is true for when the twin towers were destroyed on September 11, 2001 and Rudy Giuliani’s role in helping the city and the people.
