Adoption is such a great thing, and provides many children, with a family they have always wanted. There are local adoptions, domestic adoptions within families, and international adoptions. Even though adoption is a wonderful thing, there can be a negative side as well. There is always a risk of the children not bonding with the adoptive parents. These children, unfortunately, are at a higher risk for mental health disorders, and also, they are at risk for abandonment issues. There are community programs that aim to help adoptive parents, and the children. There is a potential risk that the children, will not bond with their adoptive parents. According to Pappas (2010), parents can experience a “post-adoptive depression”, which is similar to post-partum depression. This can be experienced when the adoptive parents do not feel like their experience is all that they have hoped, and they are disappointed. This can be not only difficult on the parents, but also on the child (if they are older). Boding is usually coupled skin-to-skin in newborns, and also having uninterrupted time together. Here is Utah, there is a group called Monarch Counseling and Healing Center, who focuses on adoption. This group has various types of therapies that can be therapeutic to adoptive families. This group is ran by a licensed mental health counselor(LCMHC). This group is funded by those patients who come for services, it is a private company. This type of therapy is therapeutic for this risk at group for many reasons. It is a place they can go to learn coping/adaption skills. They are able to discuss their challenges, and stressors and be able to not only learn how to work them through, but they are able to feel safe. This group is accessed privately, there is a phone number to call, to make an appointment. It is fairly expensive
