Heidi Moore, addicted to plastic surgery, racked up $200,000 in debt. Ever since Moore was raped at the age of 16 by two men, she has been trying to erase herself and cosmetic surgery is the only path for her to follow. Before each surgery, says Moore, “I always thought when I wake up, I would not me myself. When the anesthesia lifted, she was herself but with a new chin and bigger breasts. Moore ran $200,000 in debt through plastic surgery. Still, Moore would like one final surgery. "I want my breasts made smaller. I hate them. I got them bigger so people would look at them. Now I want people to see who I am”, said Moore. Because attractiveness has distinct advantages in our community, more people want to do plastic surgery in order to survive in the society. Today’s social media pushes people toward plastic surgery, which is a problem because it has a negative influence on society, ill effect on our bodies and high expense.
Plastic surgery results in unrealistic body shapes which influence our society in many ways. As the technology improves, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter are becoming a universal medium, the conduit for most of the unrealistic and self-obsessed images that flows through our eyes, brain and into our mind. These three main social media influence women, men and children to consider plastic surgery and meet unrealistic expectations. In a survey, 13 percent of AAFPRS (American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery) members said that photo sharing, and the patient’s displeasure with their image, are main reasons for increase in facial surgeries. Plastic surgery is a very expensive procedure.
This paper has examined the process in which the combination of ill effect, the appearance obsession, high expense and negative influence on the society caused by plastic surgery. Plastic surgery emphasizes the false idea that external beauty is more important than internal personalities. Women and men infer that despite the risk, and pain of the surgical procedure, if it is successful, all the suffered and pressure in the society would disappear. In the end, how much closer has plastic surgery brought women’s perception of body images to the social standard of beauty.
