With new innovations in technology almost every teenager is some how connected to social media, whether its on their phones, computer or IPod, and most teenagers have smartphones making it easy for them to access social media. Social media affects teenagers in many negative ways, it changes the way they think and interact such as excessive use of technology, allows for cyber bullying and websites causes low self esteem because teenagers see pictures of the “it” look. The excessive use of technology makes teenagers more antisocial in real life because of popular social media teenagers become dependent on it not knowing its negative effects. It leads to less face-to-face interactions. Plus with smartphones in todays society, teenagers have access to the internet anywhere. The more time teenagers spend on these websites the less time they spend in the real world. Which is seen everyday, if you go to a high school at lunch teenagers are sitting with a group of people and they are all mostly on their phones. In a recent study, 78% of teens now have a cell phone nine in ten (93%) teens have a computer or have access to one at home making it easy to have access to social media sites (Harvard, University). Teenagers are on their phones for most of the day, texting people checking their social media and these sites have made a lot of teenagers addicted to using them. Negative impacts include less productivity in school, because people tend to go on their accounts. Its making teenagers become ironically less social through social media because teenager’s text, and use apps such as twitter, Facebook and Tumblr. There fore with new and addictive websites teenagers become less social with real life. There’s a constant comparison with others when teenagers use websites like these and its causing harm on the way they view themselves. To conclude, social media has many negative affects, social media sites have changed the way teenagers think, interact, it affects how they act online and how they view themselves. Social media distracts teenagers from their everyday lives. It leads to unfortunate cyber bullying and it leads to reduction in face to face interactions, the more time the students spend on these social media sites, the less time they will spend socializing in real life. We need to recognize that social media is affecting the way teenagers feel about themselves, how they act and how much time it takes up on a daily basis, websites such as Tumblr and Facebook should be monitored by the creators and owners.
