Necessity of a Computer Science Degree
Today with the job market as versatile as it is in the computer field, a degree is a very valuable asset even though a job can be obtained without it. There are many students who feel that work experience is much more beneficial than the actual degree. Look at Bill Gates whom left Harvard to co-found Microsoft (Morneau).
Wayne Dysken who is the associate head of the department of computer science of Purdue University says, “A computer science degree will make you highly marketable no matter what your field of interest may be.” He says that there are many computer jobs out there available and a degree will give the graduate the option to pick the one they want. Employers use to enjoy a person who had five or more years of experience in the field, but they are realizing that these people are becoming harder to find. A college graduate has more up to date skills than most others and the enthusiasm for the job (Dysken).
A graduate has a better chance at getting what ever they want and employers are more than willing to even hire students part time while they attend college. They are even willing to pick up the bill for college (Schwartz). When you do not finish college and go right for the experience, you are placing a cap to how far you can go. The workers skills are not as well defined as the graduates. With that degree, you have the opportunity for career advancement and you are paving the way for career advancement through specific training (Keefe).

It is also estimated that the amount of jobs available will only increase by the year 2008 (Schwartz).

...truth. today’s job market is fiercely competitive. With unemployment at an all time high, it is near impossible for one to find a job with or without a college degree. Hundreds of layoffs and fewer openings can really make it hard on those who have just graduated and are trying to find a career. Just because you have a college education does not guarantee a job, or job security. It just makes you a better candidate.

Is it necessary to have a college degree before having the opportunity to experience the dream career of your choice? Depending on what background you came from, there are different reasons why we go to college. Most of us go due to career change/job position, increase our intellect/knowledge, not to be stigmatized, playing as a role model either to our children or even someone that we care of. In his essay, “A College Education: What Is Its Purpose?” Andrew DelBanco mentioned the three reasons college still matters which are: Economic (A college degree has replaced the high school diploma as “the minimum requirement into the skilled labor market.”), Opportunity (Our democratic form of government requires an educated
Figuring out if they should find jobs right out of high school or go to college first. Nevertheless, most people are sure that they want to have a better job. Not only one that will pay more, but one they are pleased with, and one that makes him/her happy. Today, practically 60 percent of all jobs in the United States require their employers to have a higher education. Jobs for individuals who only have a high school diploma are decreasing. A large majority of high school graduates work in some type of service industry. These individuals also work in low paying jobs with no position to advance. On the other hand, college graduates tend to have more skills that qualify them for a much larger range of employment opportunities. This makes it easier for them to move up in positions. According to Catherine Rampell, “there are more employed college graduates today than employed high school graduates and high school dropouts put together” (678). Thus, as the economy progresses over the years to come, college graduates will be better placed to find jobs that will offer a larger amount of pay. Therefore, earning a college degree will greatly enhance your marketability as a professional.
People with a college degree tend to make more money than those who didn’t attend college. This is because most of the jobs that have a higher earning require a college degree. People that only get their school diploma don’t make as much money as someone with a college degree. A study done suggest that people who have a college degree are more likely to get hired because they have an education compared to those who don’t. According to the United States Bureau people who achieved the current degrees earned the following median salaries. People with a doctorate degree earn $100,000 or more. With a bachelor’s degree people earn $58,000 and people with an associates earn $42,000 or more(Lucier). A High School diploma is not worth as much as a college degree. A High school diploma means less today because of the shaping of the world. People who only have a high school diploma earn only about $33,000. These numbers also depend on the type of field that you are going into. For example, people that have a bachelor’s degree in engineering or management will earn a little bit more (Lynn). They will earn more because these fields are really important. In my opinion the United States has been transformed

College is the place of opportunities unities. Attending college has more benefits than disadvantages. Students who have had good grades throughout their previous school life should attend a four-year course in order to broaden their horizons; make connections and develop a deeper understanding of their desired career. The wages for college graduates are much higher than those of high school graduates. College diplomas generally give you more opportunities. You can go to a business and start low ranking like other people who have already worked to get there and then move up before they do or even get the promotion you might not have gotten if you hadn't of gone to college. Those who were successful at college and truly tried afterwards to land steady jobs will have no problem paying of those once daunting student loans.
David Leonhardt states that “Education helps people do higher skilled work, get jobs with better paying companies or open their own businesses.” Although college has many time consuming steps to receive your degree, it is all worth the wait. I strongly side with Leonhardt for one reason, by having a college education you have a higher percentage rate of getting a higher paying job than those that have no college education. By possessing a degree from college you are eye candy to many businesses, businesses look and will hire an individual with a college education not only in the view of having a degree in a certain work area, but they are experienced and well informed. Businesses will not want to hire someone with no knowledge of the field of work, even if they understand what they are doing. Businesses look for and go with their natural instinct, the instinct to hire someone that is erudite of what they are doing.
