For nearly 2 centuries Mary Shelleys Frankenstein has been considered by many to be the ultimate human vs monster conflict. However what makes someone a “monster”? Appearance? Character traits? Since the creature was born as an outsider humans neglected him and he becomes malicious. In the beginning an overly ambitious victor creates an imperfect creature. Since he is neglected by his creator as he is born an outsider he faces societies shunning. This causes him to take his wrath out on victors family. So the question is was the creature really a monster.
To start, the definition of conflict is a disagreement between people or themselves. One could assume that victor and the creatures conflict started with victors neglect on him. A quote in the text that supports this claim is Chapter 5 page 49 “. I took refuge in the courtyard belonging to the house which I inhabited, where I remained during the rest of the night, walking up and down in the greatest agitation, listening attentively, catching and fearing each sound as if it were to announce the approach of the demoniacal corpse to which I had so miserably given life.” As you can see victor neglected the creature right at his time of birth and as a result the creature was born without a guardian and had to fend for himself which influenced his maliciousness. Next one can claim the creature was shunned by humans as a whole. On chapter 15 the creature describes how the old mans children shunned him unlike their blind father :”Felix darted forward, and with supernatural force tore me from his father, to whose knees I clung: ….”. As described in the text when feliz walked into the house he attacked the monster for no reason at all . Therefore one can see why the creature suffered so...

... was not in the creatures nature to act how he acted. For example on chapter 16 The creature retells how he saved a girl but got shot for helping another human being he states “I rushed from my hiding-place and with extreme labour, from the force of the current, saved her and dragged her to shore.” This is important since this is proof that the monster was born with good emotions like everyone else but only developed his hatred because of neglect from his creator and being shunned by mankind. Another quote would be on the same chapter he says “ Inflamed by pain, I vowed eternal hatred and vengeance to all mankind”. This proves that the creature has faced pain throughout his life and when he tries to be nice faces pain anyways. Therefore due to the many examples provided above one can conclude that nurture indeed influenced the creature.
