On Wednesday morning of July 19, 1989, it was just an average day. I woke up at 3:45 a.m., stretched, and cooked my wife and I some breakfast. The usual, scrambled eggs and toast. Today we were heading off for our vacation to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. We prepared for this vacation for months! We were excited to finally be back with our immediate family members. We began to stack our luggage into her son’s vehicle. He was going to drive us to the SUX airport. The sun has not even appeared, and my wife and I were heading off for two months of unforgettable fun. Her son began to drive off into the distance towards the airport. At the airport, we arrived approximately at 5:00 a.m... Unloaded our luggage and signed in with the attendant. She smiled, and informed us that it would be about another half hour before we would be able to board the plane. We began the security process and said our goodbyes to my wife’s son. He stayed back to watch our home voluntarily. We waited patiently as the time went by. Before we knew it, it was 6:00 a.m... We boarded the flight. Our first stop The Windy City, Chicago. Two hours on the flight was not too bad, I was able to catch up on my sleep. While in Chicago we had an extremely long layover. We had to stay put in this city for over eight hours. Our next flight to Narita, Japan was not until 4:05 On a nearby screen, there was a plane crash being reported. It looked horrifying. I walked over to that T.V. screen and continued to watch the report. In the subtitles, I read, Sioux City Flight 232 Failed Engine. I could not believe my eyes, a crash, a plane crash! I informed my wife immediately. Everyone around us looked horrified about the incident, some even called their loved ones to make sure that they were alright. My wife, frightened of the airplane’s failed engine, began to have second thoughts of boarding our next flight in less than thirty
