The Color of Family Ties (44-52) In this essay the authors Naomi Gerstel and Natalia Sarkisian address that there is a myth that Latino and Black families are more “disorganized” than White families because of single parenting and non-marriage between those two races. I think that this is untrue, as non-marriage doesn’t have anything to do with disorganization. Furthermore, families in America and around the world are very different if you compare them. Some families have more members and others don’t, for example, they could be missing a member of the family like a mom, dad, or both in rare cases. In addition, if you divide families by only three races the result may come out biased because there are more than three races in the America. …show more content…

When my sister and I would fight when we were young my mom would tell me, “You can get rid of a friend if they are mean to you, but you can’t get rid of your family if they’re mean to you.” Little did I know, she was always right about that. That being said, even if someone is from the low class, if their parents raise them right, then they will be respectful towards others throughout the course of their lives. According to the text, “In the spring of 2014 the black unemployment rate was estimated at 12.0 percent,” however, for whites, it was only 5.8 percent. Surprisingly, “In 2012 the unemployment rate for whites with less than a high school diploma was 11.4 percent . . ..” That being said, the unemployment rate for whites without a diploma was still lower than the general black unemployment rate (by 0.6 percent). Isn’t that shocking? Even though the Civil Rights Act that prohibits employment discrimination was passed in 1964, you can still see ongoing discrimination in the American workplace. It must be devastating to realize that just because you were born a certain color, people will not hire you as an employee. It makes me sad to see discrimination still going on in America. I have friends and family who are African American, and to know that they will be rejected for a job because of their color makes me angry at today’s society. People might say that slavery is worse than unemployment, but that happened years ago. We still need to improve this country’s way of thinking. The text also states that even whites who have a criminal background were slightly more likely to be hired for a job than blacks with no
