Throughout high school my experience as a writer fluctuated quite a bit. Over the years I took many different english classes which included General English, English Composition, Language Arts, and Adolescent Literature. Personally, I believe writing is an important part of education. Each class incorporates writing into their curriculum somehow, whether we were writing research papers, book reports, essays, or speeches. Writing has always been something that I have felt very neutral towards. I don't love it, but I don't hate it either. Once in a great while we would be assigned a paper that I would enjoy writing. I knew exactly what I wanted to say and how to say it. However, there have been many instances where i find myself staring at
I have never liked writing; I always thought it was a waste of time. It was a great therapy but I never found academic writing to be useful just tedious. Only ever writing when I had too made it harder for my writing skills to grow or improve in any way. I have not taken an English class since the 10th grade, even then I never gave it much effort, just doing what I had to so I could pass the class. Then I jump in to College English 1010, I feel like I do well in all other subjects but this one. English is my worst nightmare.
My English Literature major has helped me to achieve an outstanding level of appreciation, enjoyment, and knowledge of both American and British Literature. As a high school AP English student, I struggled through great works like Hamlet and To the Lighthouse. My teacher’s daily lectures (there was no such thing as class discussion) taught me merely to interpret the works as critics had in the past. I did not enjoy the reading or writing process. As a freshman at Loras, I was enrolled in the Critical Writing: Poetry class. For the first time since grade school, my writing ability was praised and the sharing of my ideas was encouraged by an enthusiastic and nurturing professor. Despite the difficulty of poetry, I enjoyed reading it. Because of my wonderful experience in Critical Writing, my love for reading and writing was renewed and my confidence in my abilities as a writer had been restored. I decided to take a second chance on English by declaring Literature and Writing as my majors.
Today we write more often, whether in school, at work, or on social networks. A writer is a person who uses written words in various styles and techniques to communicate ideas (Definition from Wikipedia; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Writer). As a writer I like to use social networks to writes post or comment on my friend’s status. I also enjoy writing on topics I like, without too many constraints on the organization of my writing. However I dislike formal writing.
Writing is an important part of everyone’s life, whether we use it in school, in the workplace, as a hobby or in personal communication. It is important to have this skill because it helps us as writers to express feelings and thoughts to other people in a reasonably permanent form. Formal writing forms like essays, research papers, and articles stimulates critically thinking. This helps the writer to learn how to interpret the world around him/her in a meaningful way. In college, professors motivate students to write in a formal, coherent manner, without losing their own voice in the process. Improving your writing skills is important, in every English class that’s the main teaching point; to help students improve their writing skills. As a writer, I would consider myself to be an average writer in need of improvement. My experience with writing has not always been the best because I was exposed to only certain types of papers like self-narratives, book reports, reflective essays and simple one to two-page research on a person’s bibliography assigned to me. Writing has never been my strength because I had to learn the English language at 8 years of age. I had to learn a new language without the help of my parents because they also did not speak English. I was able to overcome this obstacle but till this day, I still have some grammatical struggles. It is hard for me to write and to be able to distinguish my grammatical errors. The English 180 course was challenging and easy at times because it all depended on the assignments. I learned several new techniques of writing that I was never before exposed
Writing is a unique activity for me. Although I have been learning to write since I was in my pre-school, it is no doubt that I still learn how to write until now. What makes it to become a lengthy process? I guess it is because writing is linked with our mindset and our background. The level of our understanding about it will be vary due to our experiences. Therefore, our writing skills will always be changing as our life goes on. Besides the fact that my writing skill is always developing, for me writing will also show my identity. Sometimes my writing speaks louder than myself. That’s why I relate my whole writing journey as an extraordinary activity.
Analyzing, competing, and logic all come naturally to me. These are indicators that I am more left-brain dominant. This may explain why creative activities such as writing have always been more of a weakness for me. This feeling manifested itself in middle school as I had several teachers who felt that my writing were sub-par. While I had heard of “math anxiety”, I began to develop “writing anxiety”. Yet, I witnessed first-hand, particularly in my summer jobs, how important the ability to write well is for one’s career and I knew I had to overcome my fear. I needed a well-designed program to strengthen my right brain and improve my writing skills.
Writing can be a very personal form of communication. I believe writing is a very interesting and enjoyable skill to have for the future. When I think of my relationship with writing, I realize that I enjoy writing, but I have a hard time being thoughtful/deep in my topics and writing based on experiences I have had. However, being able to be a stronger and more confident writer is something I am interested in.
My earliest pieces of writing can be found in the attic of my house amongst the mice and holiday decor. These journals from my elementary school hold a myriad of tales consisting of animals of various locations befriending each other and bettering one another's life. In a neighboring area of the attic written reports about the pyramids and different types of clouds can be found from my summer writing my mother forced me to create while I on break. This attic holds a majority of the history of my writing and how I became the writer I am today but instead of climbing up a decrepit ladder into the dark one can simply look to my father for the origins of my actual writing career.
I have fairly basic experience with academic writing. I excel in writing essays for courses in history, english, and art history, in high school as well as my first few years of college. I have experience with many historical and analytical papers throughout college and high school. I am able to write long (10 pages) papers with efficiency and organization and have always been commended for my writing skills. I am also an avid creative writer. I write a lot of lyrics/poems in my free time as well as a collection of short stories. Although I have had nothing published in the past, I dream of becoming an author and getting my writing out to the public. My strengths as a writer are my creativity, organization, and flow. I am super excited for the upcoming year in Honors 10. Before we get into writing, let me tell you a little about myself. I am currently 15 years old and my birthday is September 18th. I am a very friendly person and I love being around people. I also tend to be very sarcastic, that trait comes from my mom. There are five people in my family, my mom and dad, my two sisters, and me. My parents names are Jean and Brett. My older sister, Sarah, just turned 18 and my younger sister, Erin, is 13 years old. Sarah is two years older than me and I am two and a half years older than Erin.
The novelist career is truly unique. It has always interested me. The freelance writer career seemed mysterious and exhilarating. Being able to drive someplace quiet and let out all of your hopes and fears into a book is what I want to do. A novelist is someone who writes novels basically. They combine fiction with some real life experiences and write books. Some could say that any ordinary person could do this. This statement is false! It takes someone with creativity and a passion to write. Someone who can take their life experiences and mix it with fiction to create an invigorating book. To be successful in the novelist career, education is required. Since I am going to community college first, I plan on obtaining an Associate of Arts degree. Transferring to Appalachian State University and obtaining a bachelor's degree in English would be my next step. During these four years I am going to take as many writing classes as possible. As a transfer student, I wasn’t super happy to learn that I had to take another English course, especially a specialized writing course. I came to the knowledge that I had to take the University Writing course, because it’s a requirement to graduate, therefore, I really didn’t have a choice. As I came into class the first day, my expectations left me and I was more in surprise. This course will teach me what I need to improve on and specific writing tasks I do particularly well on, and it will also get in touch with my creative side. Writing is going to challenge me, test my procrastination and teach me new ways to write; I am eager for this writing opportunity to progress further.
Taking a creative writing class was a good way for me to express my thoughts and feelings onto paper, as well as read my other classmates stories. Reading stories created by other people lead me into their mind brain to experience what type of writer they were, it was an overall exquisite class. I believe that every person has a way of expressing who they are through writing stories of their own, fiction is the best way to express your creative imagination. This class that I took for two years helped me become a better writer and helped me understand the types of writers we have.
High school in general was honestly not what I expected , it is definitely not like the movies we see on t.v. No one is singing and dancing through the halls ,there are no “mean girls “ or even rude teachers at Granada. Coming into high school I realized that it was going to be a lot of work , but I knew it was going to be especially hard for me since I came into a new high school and a totally different environment without any friends. Whether I like high school or not, I can’t avoid it, high school is a natural course and more so it is a greater step towards my career and the rest of my life.
