My Philosophy Of Volunteering

Since the age of three I have practiced the philosophy "It's not what you can do for you, but what you can do to help others". Whether big or small, when you lend a helping hand it can positively affect a life, community, environment, nation and even the world. As a potential scholar for The Shawn Carter Foundation it's expected for me to understand, acknowledge but more importantly live by the core philosophies one of which being "To whom much is given, much is expected “and to do this by completing at least 25 hours of community service hours. Everyone must help to have functionality, balance, and unity so that everything can flow properly. From the age of 3 volunteering has played a part of life, of course, when I did, I didn’t know it, but I think that is what makes it even more special. When you are willing to reach out and help someone without an incentive you are doing good for yourself, community and other people. Even if it is asking the teacher if you could help clean up the class. The first time I fully understood what volunteering was when I volunteered for The Salvation Army to serve a Christmas dinner in 2005. I didn’t understand why I was there instead of opening my toys I had received, but then when I saw all the other kids who had nothing to look for except the dinner they were eating, my heart was instantly humbled and pouring with compassion. Ever since then I have known that volunteering wasn’t about myself, but about changing lives and communities. Since I am older I am able to make an impact on a larger scale. I plan to do this by improving the look of communities with DIY projects to help give the communities, schools and shelters a better appearance during the summer. DIY projects are made by using the resources you already have and making a better use out of that resource. Doing good to your community is doing good to the people living there and what better way to help the people than teaching and mentoring our youth. I have a goal to start a chain reaction with the youth in my community. Displaying how volunteering is such a life changing experience and the effects it has on lives will encourage them to get friends involve. They will see how one selfless act can make a difference. Over time the group will accumulate, eventually becoming a whole army of youth who are wanting to make communities better. I plan to join a mentoring program while I am in school and teach the kids about the core values to success, improving your surroundings, and community service.
