My Leadership Behavior

Leadership is not just a title or position. It 's the ability to inspire others to want to listen and follow you. Being a Deckplate Leader is getting out from behind the desk, walking the spaces and getting to know your people. Leadership is having a vision and being able to communicate that vision to our Sailors.

I 've been fortunate enough in my Navy career to have had and continue to have great leaders whom has influenced my leadership style. The most important thing I learned was to take care of your people. You take care of them, and they will take care of you, ultimately getting the mission done the way it was vision. For me, this is tough as I refuse to see any of my Sailors fail. I understand that we can learn from failure, but as a leader, if I can prevent them from failing, leaders should step in. My plan to improve on this behavior is to ask them the questions to see if they all their basis covered so they can 't fail or at least if they were to fail, it wasn 't something mission …show more content…

Everyone is different: different backgrounds, different cultures, different up bringing 's, therefore, having different personalities. Everyone reacts to situations differently. By knowing your people, you can adjust your leadership style. Leaders should keep an open, positive mindset that all your Sailors are there doing their very best all the time. With that, I take care of my people with little things by letting them know what a great job they did and how much I appreciate their hard work, hosting a lunch for the team or either half days off, special liberty, nominations for Sailor of the Quarter/Year, Flag Letter of Commendations or Navy Achievement Medal depending on what the circumstances were.
