My Home Essay

I like to say I have two homes; one in the arms of my family and close friends and one in the arms of nature. The best thing about it is that there isn’t one physical location. I will always have a place that I consider home and my home will change and evolve as I do. Merriam-Webster defines “home” with six phrases, most of which talk about a physical location and a particular setting with a certain group of people. However, I define home as where I feel relaxed and comfortable, where I can be understood, and where I am in harmony with my surroundings. Home is where I learn about life and where I have found the meaning of life. Every significant event in my life or times when I have learned the most important lessons, I have been surrounded by family or the great outdoors or both. I can’t write my life story without talking about these experiences. Growing up, I always thought of my actual house as my home, and everything beyond that was a whole different world; it was an unfamiliar world for the most part. When I think of my childhood, I think about friends coming over to my house to play on my swingset and making a water park out of it with the hose, horseback riding, and taking swimming lessons at Lake Dunmore with Jake. I will elaborate more on this later, but in terms of what was going on in my family, it couldn’t be a better example. A disaster hit, just like an earthquake or wildfire or flood would in nature, and destroyed a lot. In my family, innocence was lost for me and relationships were destroyed. The thing about nature is that life grows from destruction. In fact, there have to be negative events to keep a balance. It was no different for my family; things had to change.
