Hi fellow classmates. When preparing for a career in social work there are considerations that need to be made. One of the considerations that brought me on my path to becoming a social worker is my passion for helping others and because of this have always sought out employment where I can promote social justice and the well-being of others. Another consideration was having a career where I would continue learning. It has only been over the last few years that I have discovered the joy and feeling of accomplishment that comes with continuously learning and gaining knowledge. Other considerations that I were taken into account before I began my journey were my ability to practice self-awareness and knowing what my biases where and being able These individuals have shown me that to be an effective social worker it is important to be able to integrate one’s personal and professional aspects into this profession while also remembering to practice self-care in order to avoid burnout or compassion fatigue. On page 203 of our textbook, Garthwait explains that social workers, “Must have a high level of self-awareness so they can make good choices in relation to the type of job they seek, practice self-care and stress management, and balance personal and professional responsibilities” (2014). Along with this it is important to practice cultural competence so that you are able to understand your client as a human being with their own ideas and beliefs. This was shown on a daily basis at my field placement. Those individuals who mentored me throughout the last few months never focused on the client’s weaknesses or problems, but on what abilities, talents, and resources they did
I knew I loved to help others but it was not until I was an emerging adult that I knew what my calling was. My devotion to improve the quality of life for those who are disadvantaged is one of the reasons I have chosen to pursue a Master’s in Social Work. After obtaining my masters, I plan on diversifying my masters by getting licensed and becoming a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. There are many reasons why I decided that I wanted to work in the social work profession. When I first enrolled in college, I was a nursing major with the mindset of becoming a neonatal nurse. When that did not go as planned, I decided to become a social work major because I knew I would receive the same reward of helping someone out and providing an individual with a better opportunity by lending him or her a hand. This was my first reason for choosing this career because I saw so many benefits from this profession. My second reason for was due to the fact that I want to help people during their time of need. Social Workers are in various different roles within society such as: therapists, advisors and administrators. These respective vocations focus on creating an environment that evokes both warmth and understanding. A social worker with brass or smug qualities will not incite trust in patrons. Social worker with such qualities affirms the belief that a naturally empathetic personality is fundamental and empathy is a main component of my character. Growing up in a society where there are so many opportunities, I had no problem figuring out what I wanted to do with my life. I have always enjoyed helping others in any way that I was able too. From babysitting, raking leaves, serving as a volunteer for a number of organizations, no matter how big or small the need, I have always found it gratifying to help others. A few of my strengths are having Empathy and activing listening skills and using social perspectives and being organized. As a social worker empathy is very important, empathy is the ability to identify with or vicariously experience another person’s situation. Empathizing is both an intellectual and emotional process that makes it far easier to understand and help others solve their problems. Active Listening is another aspect that I believe I am personally gifted in. The ability to listen carefully, ask pertinent questions and retain verbally transmitted information is vital to the counseling aspect of social work. It’s how we establish trust, open doors and discover valuable details about the individuals who seek our help in understanding their unique circumstances. Using Social perspectives is also another major part of social work, I believe receiving and processing verbal information, a social worker must be sensitive to body language, social cues, implications and cultural patterns of behavior. While some clients may clearly state their needs and work toward solutions in a focused manner, many others will find it more challenging to express themselves verbally, requiring a perceptive social worker to “read between the lines” in order to interpret the thoughts and feelings being held
For the first two years of college, I excelled in taking Nursing classes and even got into the Nursing Program at UCM. But something changed at the beginning of my junior year and I could not deny not wanting to be a Nursing major any longer. As my classes advanced I realized that the passion I once had for Nursing was not there any more. I could not see myself being a proficient Nurse if I did not have a desire for the job. So after researching Social Work again, the option that I once ignored came back into my life. For a while, I challenged myself to see if this was a career choice that would make me happy.
The main reason I chose the social work profession, manifested early within my stages of childhood. The importance of giving to and caring for those in need, were deeply embedded in my very soul. Being reared by my grandmother, a nurse and by my teenage mother, a psychology student, I was exposed constantly to acts of kindness and generosity. As a result to my empathetic personality, I was welcomed into many social and ethnic groups, not commonly open to a young gay black male. I got to take in more about social work which was truly intriguing. I didn't generally think about all the diverse individuals that social workers help, however, it was fascinating hearing the more social, human part of it. I would say that most people who enter the social work profession are persuaded by the wanting to help other people and also the want to change their reality.
