Caring Assignment Caring is the act of displaying kindness and concern for others. When you care you display affection. You may like or be willing to do something for someone. Maybe even look after and provide for a person. Caring can be displayed in many ways. Caring plays a big role in the nursing profession. Choosing to become a nurse is making a moral commitment to care for all patients. Nurses are the main providers of care. Being able to treat that patient holistically and not just their illness. Care drives the treatment that is provided. It helps develop good rapport between you and your patient during their stay. You wouldn’t care for each patient the same. She’s a single mother of two, full time college student and full time worker. She had her kids at a young age so she wasn’t able to live her teenage years the way she wanted. Her problem was never having a babysitter or having time to enjoy herself. Over mini break I decided to use her as my caring project. I surprised her and showed up to her house. I told her I was bored and asked if I can give her a little make over. I did her and makeup and put together an outfit for her. One thing about her is ever since becoming a mom she always felt insecure. Once I finished I knew just by her facial expressions that she loved it. The next surprise was telling her to out and enjoy herself. Of course the first question she asked was who’s going to watch the kids. Of course I was. She went on a date with her boyfriend. I knew she was going to enjoy her night. She thanked me over and over and still does until this day. My project allowed me to provide happiness to someone else other than me who deserved it. It was the best feeling ever and worth

Everyday in this world, elderly, adults, teens or children become ill or get into accidents and need medical attention. Whether these elderly, adults, teens or children are taken to a hospital, pediatrician, specialist, or clinic, a doctor and a nurse will tend to them. The nurse plays a role that is just as important as the doctor. Nurses work very closely with the families as part of the caring process. Every member of the family plays a role in different ways. The nurses are there to help the patient as well as the family step through the illness or injury. They provide information for the prevention of future illness and injury, and help to comfort the patient and his/her family. It is vital that a nurse understands that to be a nurse, you need a certain personality and understanding of the field.
Caring is the biggest aspect in the nursing field. Aspiring nurses choose to become nurses because they want to care for people in ways that most professions cannot do. Without caring nursing would not be the field it is today. The culture of caring involves intervening programs that help to build caring behaviors among nurses. As nurses become stressed and become down on their life it has shown that caring for oneself before others is key in caring for patients. Lastly, throughout the years many theorists have proven that caring has come from many concepts and ideas that relate directly to ICU nursing.

Nursing is much more than taking blood pressures, temperatures, and assessing for health care problems. These are the necessary skills to meet the immediate health care needs of a patient. For me, nursing is much more than ensuring than an individual. It is sum total of many individuals in various community settings that make the art of nursing important. As a hospice nurse, I contribute to the overall health of the patient, family, and close friends.

Caring can be described in many different ways. One demonstration of caring is when a nurse at a hospital helps those who are physically ill become well again. Caring also practices involvement in the connection, mutual recognition and involvement between nurse and client. "The Community Health Nursing: Caring in Action” (1999) defines “those assistive, enabling, supportive, or facilitative behaviors toward or for another individual or group to promote health, prevent disease, and facilitate healing”(p.6). Another definition from another author such as (Harkreader, 2000) wrote, sees caring as a universal behaviour observed in human beings and influenced by Society, culture, values and gender”(p.1450). Actually, before doing the volunteer work, I thought that nursing was only a high salary job that only need to take care of people as the Nightingale defined nursing as “the act of utilizing the environment of the patient to assist him in his recovery”(Berman, Snyder & Frandsen, 2015, p.42). Moreover, the concept of caring in my mind were only helping people and a physical duty of a nurse. Therefore, I thought that the role of nursing was just a caregiver and only responsible for restoring health of ill client. However, after joining the volunteer work and watching the video about nursing, the experiences and the video change my concept about what are nursing, caring and the role and responsibilities in nursing.
The theoretical perspective of Boykin and Schoenhofers’s (2013) Nursing as Caring theory is built on the foundation that “all persons are caring”. The value of being human is the essential and central concept in this theory and key to understanding its perspective. Caring is the intentional and authentic presence of an individual with another who is understood as a person living caring and growing in caring (Boykin & Schoenhofer, 2013). Boykin and Schoenhofer (2013) define nursing as a profession and discipline which involves the nurturing of persons living and growing in caring.
Caring for patients is a critical part of nursing. Caring as an art of nursing originated from Florence Nightingale. However, the conceptual meaning of caring in nursing as an art has not been well clarified. The art of caring is underpinned by metaphysical and empirical knowledge (Buswell, 2001). Considering empirical research, caring in nursing is an art because of its research methodologies and the entire science of nursing.
From my point of view, the concept of care or caring is very complex. It includes concern, attention, love, kindness, compassion, protection, trust, support, responsibility. On the one hand, caring for somebody is a very hard work, but on the other hand, caring is a very rewarding experience. As a parent and a wife, I can say that when you care for your loved ones you create the intimate connections that makes you feel happy and whole. As a nursing student, I would say that caring in nursing is even broader concept compared to the personal caring for family.
I always treat each person as a unique individual with unique life experiences. I treat my patients with respect and address their cultural beliefs and values. I pride myself with having a caring attitude and want to help and heal people from their illness physically and psychologically. I think nursing can be both science and art. I think to be a successful nurse; the nurse needs to master the art of caring and continually learn and apply knowledge of nursing science throughout their career. Without caring or nurturing the nurse cannot connect with the patient and trust will not develop, without a trusting relationship, therapeutic nursing will not be able to occur. Therefore, I feel caring is at the forefront of all successful nursing interactions. This is not to negate the value that science brings to nursing. She said, “I’m a grandmother, my love for you is just like having another daughter.” I realized that she was my biggest supporter and teaching me how to be independent was something she did from the bottom of her heart. She also felt that since my father wasn’t in my life that I deserved to have all the support from family. My mother is a single mom and my grandmother stepped up to the plate and helped where my mom fell short. I will always have the up-most respect for my grandmother because she went over and beyond for me. I felt as though my grandmother did everything out of love and not because she felt obligated to. She hasn’t missed a beat in my life, every school performance, dance recitals, and band performance my grandmother was there.
