Stereotype “a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing”. There are many stereotypes out in the world of certain groups or people such as Muslims, Americans, Mexicans, women, and men. Yet, all Muslims are perceived to be bad and it is more common for people to identify Muslims with the stereotypes of being “terrorists”, oppressing women, and how they worship.
To begin with, violence and being called terrorists is the most frequent stereotype of how Muslims are identified. According to adl.org a common stereotype is “Islam is a violent religion and muslims identify with terrororism”. It’s one of the most common stereotypes because of the terrorists attacks that have occurred in America that

Keeping in mind that women all over, no matter the race are still seen as unequal at a certain level to some of the population. But Muslim women are looked as being oppressed more than any other women of a different religion, often because of the clothing they wear mainly the head scarf. In contrary, it is not oppression that makes them wear the headscarf but in most cases it’s their own choice, depending on where they live. As stated by adl.org “many women choose to wear a hijab, niqab, or burqa on their own and do so for a variety of reasons including a sense of pride in being Muslim, a collective sense of idenity or to convey a sense of self-control in public life.” Not only for those reasons do they wear the hijab but it’s part of their religion for both men and women to dress with modesty. For example, “Muslim women wear full-body garments that only expose their eyes. Some cover every part of their body except their face and hands. Some believe only their hair and cleavage is compulsory to hide, and others do not observe any special dress rules. In the United states it is more common to see women only wearing the hijab around their hair to cover everything except their face and it’s less frequent to see Muslim women in the United states fully covered so only their hands and feet are seen.” The same rule applies to men, modesty is key, therefore men are also required to not wear tight clothing and be covered from the “navel to below the knee”. One thing that men can not do is dress like women they must dress like men and that includes not wearing jewelry which only the women are able to do. In addition, Muslim children are raised the same as any other culture, for both genders to be equal. In the Quran, the central text of Islam, it’s stated that both genders
In Islam, women are treated with the highest esteem. They are not seen as inferiors or as sexual objects. They are seen to be very important in life as they give birth. The Qur’an mentions how men and women cannot be separate.
According to Dictionary.com a stereotype is something conforming to a fixed or general pattern, especially an often oversimplified or biased mental picture held to characterize the typical individual of a group (dictionary.com).
Muslim women cover themselves by wearing Hijab. Hijab, which is also known as the veil, is the Islamic dress for women consisting the head covering, along with the body covered modestly. In Learning Islam 2, according to historians, the practice of Hijab was “part of [the] everyday dress for women in Ancient Christian and Jewish communities”(D32). Back then, many Christian and Catholic women wore a head covering as a sign of chastity. We can also see that there are references to the practice of wearing the veil in both the Old and New Testaments, “…if a woman does not have her head veiled, she may as well have her hair cut off. But if it is too shameful for a woman to have her hair cut off or head shaved, then she should wear a veil” (I Corinthians 11:6). As you can see, the Bible gives the woman the choice of wearing the veil or have her hair cut off.
As for Muslim women, they wear a headscarf known as the hijab. Hijab is a veil that covers the head and chest. Most Muslim women at the age of puberty, wear the hijab in the presence of adult males outside of their immediate family. Most women wear abayas. Abayas are long/loose dresses. The purpose to why they dress the way they do is,hence they want to protect themselves from harm and to keep their lovely beauty for their husband. This is worn in public, yet still they can dress however they wish in their place of residency.Abayas are very similar to the graduation gowns worn when high schoolers graduate and when judges in courts judge .If successful mortals wear them ,therefore it is a sign of greatness and achievement. Some citizens find that wearing religious garments in public should not be permissible, hence it would be as if they said a human being graduating shouldn't be permissible to wear the
Fatemeh Fakhraie’s essay “Scarfing it Down,” explains how Muslim women suffer because of what they wear. Fakhraie blogs about Muslim women in her website she explains; “Seeing ourselves portrayed in the media in ways that are one-dimensional and misleading." Several people judge Muslim's by their appearance because they assume they're a bad person. The author of this essay wants the reader to know that Muslim women wearing a hijab are not a threat to the world.
This all started on September 11, 2001 when 4 airplanes were hijacked. Two crashing into the twin towers, one into the Pentagon, and one into a field that was either heading towards the White House or the Capitol. A total of nineteen terrorists from Middle East, who were a part of a terrorist group known as al-Qaeda led by Osama Bin Laden, were involved in this attack. Killing almost 3,000 people and destroying some of America’s most known buildings left Americans hurt, scarred, and afraid. Since September 11, 2001, Muslims have been stereotyped as terrorists on daily basis and especially on every September 11th after the attack and while Americans fear Muslims, Muslims fear Americans.
I feel the biggest misunderstood culture today is the Muslim culture. Muslims are always ridiculed and stereotyped as terrorists and are always getting racist jokes thrown at them. Whenever people see someone of the Muslim culture on the street, they’re so quick to judge them and give them dirty looks as if they are aliens from a different planet. Everyone thinks Muslims are terrorists that hate America, when in reality, that is just a big stereotype that is far from the truth. I feel most of these stereotypes and racist jokes about Muslim Americans come from the fact that we have troops fighting across seas against Al Qaeda and the Taliban, and people seem to link all Muslims with those two terrorist groups, which is a very racist accusation of anyone who believes that. Muslim Americans are stereotyped as terrorists who hate America, when in reality, the Muslim people and culture are a very peaceful people.
Stereotypes are a fixed image of all members of a culture, group, or race, usually based on limited and inaccurate information resulting from the minimal contact with these stereotyped groups. Stereotypes have many forms: people are stereotyped according to their religion, race, ethnicity, age, gender, color, or national origins. This kind of intolerance is focused on the easily observable characteristics of groups of people. In general, stereotypes reduce individuals to a rigid and inflexible image that doesn't account for the multi-dimensional nature of human beings. One example of stereotypes is the categorization of the Jews in the Elizabethan era.
Men determine how women dress.” (Quran 2:228) “Wives have the same rights as the husbands have on them in
Cover yourself, wear loose clothes, so you can be respected and not annoyed by men that are weak in their faith, and that are easily tempted and as a result disrespect women instead of lowering their gaze as they were told in the Qur’an to do so. The message is to cover yourself, just like the meaning of hijab is “to cover”, pull a “curtain”. It is to cover your body and be respectful. If you go out wearing respectful clothes and not seeking attention, then men will most likely lower their gaze and show some respect. Most girls and women these days speak of men as “animals” (disgusting) as they flirt and act vulgarly, which is true at times.
Stereotype ? a conventional, formulaic, and oversimplified conception, opinion, or image about groups of people on the basis of limited information. ?Television, books, comic strips, and movies are all abundant sources of stereotyped characters?2. Sometimes what we see on a certain television show, hear from someone or read about in a particular article, we form a ...
Are women supposed to "cover up"? Is it our duty as women to hide our bodies in order to not become sexualized as human beings? Why is it that men are not subject to the same sexualization, victimization and means as women are? These are a few of the many questions brought to my mind when I think of modesty. Society defines modesty in ways that have changed over time to the point in which the line between being modest and what is not modest has become blurred. Religions often times regulate the amount of skin or the level of modesty a woman should have. Multiple religions partake in religious coverings, clothing, or symbols worn on a woman 's ' body but hardly any force men to do the same or model a similar fashion. Between religion and media there is a strict pattern in the ways a woman is supposed to dress.
While people in the west think that women in Islam are oppressed, they do not know that Islam liberated women from oppression. There are many people who have opinions about the religion of Islam, but mostly about the women who follow it. Westerners have this idea that women in Islam are disrespected, mistreated and oppressed. In actuality, these allegations are incorrect. Women in Islam have rights and are not oppressed. The veil is widely misunderstood and many do not know what it represents. In many ways, men and women are equal as much as they are not; and this is in every religion.
Within the Middle East, the largest population of the men and women are Muslim. The Muslim religion suggests that women wear a veil or hijab, which is a head scarf that only exposes a woman’s eyes, accompanied by a burqa which is a full body cloak. The sole purpose of the clothing is to cover a woman’s feminine features from men’s eyes. The Qur’an, an Islamic scripture, supports and slightly obligates the uniform by saying that women are to be conservative, “let them wear their head covering over their bosoms, and not display their ornaments.” (Qur’an).
In the Islamic faith, Muslim women are required to dress modestly by God. In the Qur’an, God speaks directly to all Muslim women and says “...guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment (The Qur’an 24:31)”. Muslim women have to wear a hijab, or a head covering, when they are in public places and when they are around men who are not close relatives. In fact, countries like Saudi Arabia and Qatar have a mandatory dress code enforced. Muslim women in these countries have to wear a hijab and an abaya, or a full-length, loose fitting garment on top of their clothes. Although God requires Muslim women to dress modestly and Saudi Arabia and Qatar have a dress code, it is entirely their choice on what they would like to wear.
