I was never the type to enjoy volunteering. The first thing that came to mind was doing work without compensation, that was my definition of volunteering before I volunteered at Bayview. I was never interested in volunteering, not because I am selfish, but because I never realized how important it was to volunteer. At Bayview, I helped out Mrs. L., the musician, during music therapy. At first, I thought my tasks were to play instruments and sing for the residents. However, it was much more than entertaining them. It was being able to make a connection with them, listening, talking, and helping them reconnect with other people. Music therapy allowed them to reminisce about their life. I wasn’t accustomed to entertaining a handful of people. However, after the fourth week, I was accustomed to it. I was doing more than just playing instruments, I was involving the residents to participate with Mrs. L. and I. Additionally, I would sit down and communicate with the residents and listen to their stories. Music therapy was more than just making music, it was about giving the residents something to look forward and giving them something to enjoy. For example, whenever Mrs. L. and I would arrive at the recreation room, for whichever designated floor, the room would be full of residents. Sometimes there would be residents from different floors. There are a few residents who do not like the bunny, but for those who adore the rabbit, their face instantly lit up when they are in the rabbit’s presence. For some of the residents, the rabbit triggers a memory when they once had their own pet. It reminds them of the time they used to spend with their own pets. For example, the first time I walked around with the bunny, I met Mrs. N. in her room. Before I came in she was just laying down watching television. When the bunny and I came in, her mood changed. She was full of joy and she became very talkative. She went on about how her son had a farm, and he had numerous animals on the farm including rabbits. Eventually, she began talking about before she arrived at Bayview she had a dog and a cat and she loved them very much, but when she left her home she had to give them away to her neighbors.
