February 7, 2018, I attended the Lydian string quartet hosted by the University of Central Arkansas at the Snow fine arts center. The performance was a classical called Love and Death. It was performed by four talented musicians. The instruments that were played was two violins, a viola, and a cello. The musicians played three different selections of music by three different artists. The performers took their seats accept the violist. He remanded standing and explained the theme of the three sections of music they were going to play. He briefly described how the performance was going to go, and then took his seat. As they adjusted their instruments, getting ready to play, the audience was anxiously waiting to listen.

The opus was played in E flat major. The way the musicians started was everyone got positioned, and one person would sniff their nose to hint when to start. They would also sniff their nose during each performance if they had a pause and wanted to be synchronized after the pause. The first piece had a very low tone that made the music sound was very dramatic. what made it sound so dramatic was there were many long pauses and long notes strung out that set the audience’s mood. There was not a set range. There high and low pitches and everything in between. There were times where a musician had a solo, other times there would be duets, and other times they were all in sync. All musicians used their fingers or bow to play. All of the musicians started with everyone having a constant tempo. The piece in itself seemed to be a lot more upbeat/happier. The body language the musicians portrayed while playing set the tone for the piece. When he wrote this last piece, it seemed to be more of a celebration of his life and achievements. The lines were ABA, they would repeat every other line. Decrescendo and crescendo would go back and forth, neither were ever set.
