There are a lot of people learning and using English as their foreign language in the world. They have different motivations for acquiring English because their objects of learning it differ from one another. Some need to study English to get a job and talk with relatives and others call for learning English as it is a required subject in school. Moreover, their motivations are affected by their first language, some of which are similar to English and do not require a lot of efforts for the speakers to acquire English. In my case, I was studying English because it was a required subject and related to my grade in school in the first six years. However, the meaning for me to study English has been changing through the life in university and experiences abroad. In middle school, I started to study English, which is common in Japan. The center activity of the class I took is to understand new vocabularies and grammar. Even though teachers did some communicative activities such as a role-playing and discussion, it still focused on the accurate use of grammar. As I …show more content…
I was always struggling to get the points of new grammar reading the textbooks. Besides, I used more the materials for reading and writing in high school than middle school. All lessons were for passing high-ranked university. As I advanced from the first year to the second and third year, I had less time to do communicative activities. In the last year in school, I seldom spoke English in class and lessons were tedious for me. Most of my memories in classes are made up of being suffering from the memorization and recitation. However, at that time, I believed that it was a usual and general English class and did not be suspicious of whether it was meaningful or not. Hence, I was studying English to be successful in the exams in school and entrance examination for university. I had never been curious to communicate with my classmates in
In the above cited article (Norton, 1997) we can find the case of Mai, an interview which is particularly revealing in terms of motivation. Mai is an immigrant girl living in English speaking country. She explained that after attended to a 6 months-ESL intensive course, after achieving successfully some expected goals, she continued with an ordinary course. Mai had to do a big effort after working long hours to attend to this course. So, it could be said that her motivation was considerably high. However, she expressed an enormous frustration because despite all the sacrifices she was meant to do, she ended up learning “nothing at all”. Her reflection, as the reflection of many L2 students,
Motivation is defined as the process that guides, initiates, and maintains goal orientated behavior and thought (Cherry, 2013). Motivation is what drives individuals to do what they do, whether it is something as simple as getting a drink because he or she are thirsty or something as big as getting up every day and gong to work for a paycheck.
Growing up learning and speaking English has been something that was difficult for me at first but then came easy, but that was not the case for my mother. She spent her whole life speaking Spanish, so when she decided to take English learning classes it was challenging. However, she had me to help her throughout her struggle. I helped her complete her homework and assignments. We would also go to the library to check out easy level reading books to have her read to me. I would correct her English when it was wrong and do all I could to boost her confidence. It took me a while to understand and figure out what the best way to teach her was, but it was a fun experience for the both of us. Teaching her English was difficult because things that
Sekelj and Rigo (2011) stated that there are three phases of learning the English language. The first phase is the pupils of Year 1 to Year 4, where in this phase, pupils are preferably do a lot of mechanical drilling and practicing some patterns of grammatical features which occur in the context of dialogue that are related to their real-life without any metalinguistic explanation in order to allow them to participate orally and physically as much as possible in dialogues, role playing and dramatizing. It is because, in this stage, it is important to make them conscious of their progress and increasing their motivation to use the language. Teacher should use a variety of activities to teach grammar such as by using songs, riddles, games and stories because it could be very helpful and an efficient ways in teaching grammar as what had suggested by Long (2000) where this FonF approach is effective because it is learner-centered and tune to the learners’ internal syllabus. According to Sekelj and Rigo (2011), Vilke (1977) said that, at the early age, the unconscious acquisition process is superior to the learning one due to the child’s cognitive development. Next, the second phase is Year 5 to Year 6 where in this stage, grammar start to be taught explicitly but with simple and clear explanation and awareness of accuracy of grammar structure should be
Motivation is key in the workplace. It is developed from the collaboration of both conscious and unconscious principles such as the strength of desire or need, motivating force or reward estimation of the objective, and desires of the person and of his or her peers/co-workers. These elements are the reasons one has for carrying on a specific way. An illustration is an understudy that invests additional energy contemplating for a test since he or she needs a superior review in the class. The Inside and outside principles that animate want and vitality in individuals to be constantly intrigued and centered around their work, part or subject, or to try to achieve an objective.
Sams explained that both traditional and in-context approaches to teach grammar are unsuccessful because “they treat grammar as something that exists apart from and outside of the writing process itself” (57). When referring to grammar and writing, Sams suggests “to study one is to study the other” (57). Sams explained that she first emphasized the process of drafting and revising. Sams’s instruction included the students working together and sharing their ideas and feedback during the drafting process. However, Sams realized that this process would not be successful without first teaching the students how to revise. Sams then based the instruction on the concept that the students needed to organize their work in a reasonable order that can be understood by others. Sams explained that to organize ideas, the students needed to be able to understand “how their ideas relate to one another” and how to separate “main ideas and supporting details” (58). However, to separate main ideas from...
On the other hand, teachers prefer using L1 for a more effective approach to teaching grammar and checking students’ understanding. Macaro (1997) commented that teachers often lack enthusiasm in using the target language for grammar explanation. Many students have difficulty in learning grammar, especially for those whose L1 system is entirely different from the TL. L1 can be more efficient, particularly when a teacher wants to discuss the learning contract with students, or tries to explore the needs of his/her students, especially those in the lower level (Harmer, 2007). Evidence provided by Harmer (2007) also indicates that the classroom environment can be enhanced through the use of L1 to establish a positive social relationship with students, which ultimately leads to a more effective teaching process.
People’s behaviour is determined by what motivates them. The aim of this essay is to discuss the essence of the motivation and psychological strengths, its evolution, a brief overview of the key theories of the employees’ motivation and behaviour analysis. The main task is to understand how motivation affects employee behaviour and to clarify the importance of motivation. In this essay I will discuss and produce definitions and examples to answer the main question of what is the driving force and how do people’s needs influence performance at work?
It is not uncommon to say that grammar instruction plays an important role in language teaching. Regarding the status and importance of grammar teaching, a variety of opinions have been made. Batstone (1994) states that “language without grammar would be chaotic: countless words without the indispensable guidelines for how they can be ordered and modified” (p. 4). More vividly, Wang (2010) makes two similes. She compares grammar to the frame of a house, which is a decisive factor to ensure the solidness of it. Additionally, she regards grammar as a walking stick, whose function is to help and support students to learn English. Thus, the nature of grammar instruction manifests its own significance as it helps students enhance their overall language proficiency by integrating grammar into other aspects of learning, like listening, speaking, reading and writing.
I feel that the materials presented in class should be thought provoking enough where students can exercise their critical thinking skills. Working in groups and interacting with other students should be encouraged because this way, a student can learn how to collaborate with one another but also learn how to accept different viewpoints. When teaching English, it is important for students to have conversational experiences with one another because many times students would focus only on grammar and can potentially be problematic. I believe that oral speaking is the most important part of learning any language however, students who focus solely on grammar often lack skills to carry on a conversation because they are unable to effectively communicate their thoughts orally. Students must be able to not only understand grammar but to also practice true ...
Coming from a Spanish speaking household having to learn a new language can always be difficult. While, I was a child learning a second language was difficult. It was difficult for me to put words to use in the correct way. And use terms that make sense with one another term. It was difficult for me because some Spanish words sound the same as English words, and while learning I wanted to translate everything the way I say it in Spanish to English. For example, in Spanish “helo” means ice, but if you say it out loud it sounds like “yellow”. Little things like that will be a big issue to me. I have to put up with many looks from others and hear all sorts of criticism around me. Learning a new language at a young age was a struggle with reading
There is a certain level of humility involved in teaching and being a student. Providing students with the confidence to ask questions is important. This means making sure the appropriate tone is taken when presenting fact and answering questions. Teaching grammar only works if there is open communication between teacher and student. There will be questions because grammar and language can be messy. It is important for teacher to remember that there is no correct way to teach grammar and students should know that there it is okay to let the teacher know when they do not understand
Study is necessary to succeed. Study is a good way to develop our mental. Study can increase our experience and knowledge. Study can also train our mind to understand the complexities of the subject chosen and then apply that understanding in practical terms. Through study, we can learn how to discipline ourselves to do something you don’t want to do, which will help us succeed in anything in our life.
The first semester which I experienced left me a deep impression. I found myself to be an outsider in the class even though I tried my best to participate into all the classroom activities. All English teaching and learning environment is one of the challenges for me, because I haven’t such experience before.
