In Jeannette Walls’ novel Half Broke Horses, the main character Lily Casey Smith faces many moral convictions throughout the story; from traveling all on her own at a young age while encountering all the obstacles she did, as well as making her trek to a new location. She never backed down and molded to what people wanted her to. Lily Casey was a dedicated woman and was going to do what she thought was right no matter what the consequences were. Lily made it very clear when she believed what she was doing was for the best, “You deputies may think you run Yavapai Country, but I run my classroom, and I’ll discipline wayward kids as I see fit . Very recently I faced a moral conviction; I had just become friends with a few girls who for the most part were always on the same page; until one day when the topic of gay marriage came up; and it didn 't come up in a casual conversation but in front of a gay couple and a room full of people we didn 't know. This topic had never come up for us so we didn 't know each others stance. On this day we had all been at the beach and wanted to do a little shopping after, so we stopped at a Brandy Melville store. We were all shopping around and laughing and having a really fun day no fussing or anything, just like always. I had called my friends over to look at a top I wanted to buy; and there happened to be a couple, two girls, they were holding hands. My friend at the time very obviously looked at them with disgust; I ignored it because if I 'm being honest she was always a little on the judgmental side. While I was holding up the top asking them if I should buy it or not. Two of my other friends were paying attention and telling me I should get it for sure, and then there was Ashleigh and Brittanie in the back.They were very obviously talking about the two girls. The couple was not bothering anyone and very discreetly kissed each other in no way trying to show off that they were a couple, and thats when I found out I no longer wanted to be friends with Ashleigh. Sometimes there are situations where in the long run its better to let things go and keep your feelings toward the subject suppressed, but with that being said you should always do what you can to choose the best alternative action. Half Broke Horses is a great novel to inspire those to stick to their heart and do what they think is best. Never let anyone walk all over you, and always stick to what your heart is telling you to, and thats exactly what Lily did throughout her
