The syllabus written for schools in Malaysia has included several varieties of moral values in which teachers should inculcate those moral in their lessons. Instilling moral values in education is said to be vital as it helps in country development from the aspect of forming a good society thus moulding better citizens. When moral values are being overlooked from early childhood education, children may grow up into teenagers with lack moral awareness. As Robert Fulgham writes in his book "All I Really Needed to Learn I Learned in Kindergarten," most moral values can be taught to a child at a very young age, such as sharing, compromising, getting along and learning to clean up, listening to the teacher and so on.

Referring to Bronfenbrenner’s ecological theory of development, an individual is influenced by what they received from institutional community at exosystem level. Institutional community involves other students, teachers, janitors, canteen workers and others. However, student-teacher contacts happen more frequently in schools, second to student-student contacts. Students absorb lessons from their teachers and therefore, it is very important for them to be taught proper moral values in every subject they are learning.
Bahasa Melayu, English Language and History subjects are made compulsory by the government for all public schools in Malaysia. Language teachers have the best medium such as short stories, fables, poems and novels that can portray differences and consequences of good and bad deeds. These tools are very essential for values and cultural transmission from one generation to another. Research Objectives:
- To identify the variety of moral values prescribed in Form 4 English literature component short stories
- To survey the impact of prescribed moral values on Form 4 students
- To evaluate the effectiveness of moral values in short stories on Form 4 students based on survey result

v. Research Questions
This study will attempt to answer the following questions:
- What are the moral values prescribed in Form 4 literature component short stories?
- Do the moral values prescribed in the Form 4 short stories impact the students?
- How do the prescribed moral values in Form 4 short stories leave impact to the students?

vi. Significance of the Study
This study will benefit the society in several levels. Firstly, it can raise awareness among language teachers to crucially emphasize moral values in their lessons. Consequently, this will help to develop students to be more mindful individuals regarding altruism. Lastly, the society will be benefited from these acts when we are able to raise ethically aware individuals in forming better society for national development. Overall, this study is a small act in realising Malaysian’s philosophy of education.
