Kimberly- Clark Corporation is using virtual stores to help better understand their customers’ shopping habits. These virtual stores allow the customer to feel as if they are standing in a real life brick and mortar retail space. The customer is able to see the store layout and products. By allowing the customer to see competitors’ products as well, Kimberly – Clark Corp is able to understand product placing, lighting and other key factors that go into product placement in retail stores. Feedback is a very important part of any business but especially in retail. The retail store usually knows that their customers are looking for from products to location to price point. By allowing the retail businesses to see the Virtual Shopping Studio, Kimberly-Clark Corp is able to get valuable feedback from the retailer long before their products are in the real store. Marketing research is also important when dealing with the competition. These virtual shopping studios allow for companies, including Kimberly-Clark Corp., to gather data and use that data to get ahead of the competition. They can determine if a customer is drawn towards a specific item due to placement, color or price. They can analyze this data to change their products or to change their marketing plans. Virtual reality is a newer form of technology that is growing in popularity among retailers. One industry that could benefit from this new form of technology, and has to some degree today already, is the home improvement industry. Home improvements can be costly and making decisions can be difficult. By allowing customers to use virtual technology to see what those improvements would look like or to help make decisions on what products to buy, companies could be selling more products. Lowe’s home improvement has started using this form of technology and allows their customers to create their space and even walk into it by using virtual reality (Oldham, 2017). Another industry that could benefit from virtual technology is tourism. By allowing customers to see what specific places look like through virtual reality, companies could increase sales to those locations. Travel agencies could get on board and really drive sales by allowing the customer to step into a tropical paradise when deciding on what their next vacation might be. Hotels and restaurants could benefit from this as well when using virtual reality to make a sale for a vacation spot or a vacation home. I think using virtual reality as a test drive for new vehicles would be an innovative way to help car dealerships sale more products.
