The controversial issue of whether slavery is right or wrong has been a topic of debate for many centuries, while the larger effects of this atrocious topic is as wide ranged as its presence in the current economy. Modern slavery demonstrates how this tragedy affects our economy on a much bigger scale, while still acknowledging those who are forced to go through this horrendous process of “freedom.” Ever since the good deeds of abolitionists such as Harriet Tubman, William Lloyd Garrison, Fredrick Douglass slavery is seen to be no more in societies around the world, however, modern slavery is continued to be unrecognized of its importance and activeness in the world today ("How Slavery Helped Build a World Economy."). From forced labor, to sex trafficking, to child labor, there are several forms of slavery currently impacting the world in intolerable ways (State 1).
Because of these various forms of slavery, this imprisonment is still active in the world today, keeping worldwide modern slavery updated. Forced Labor occurs when corrupt employers force employees to work due to the current, “high rates of unemployment, poverty, crime, discrimination, corruption, political conflict, or even cultural acceptance of the practice,” in these societies, forcing these humans to fill the positions of these slaves (State 1). Immigrants are also targeted to being forced to work, as well as women of bonded labor who are sexually abused. Sex Trafficking is widespread form of slavery for adults, if an adult is being forced into prostitution; he or she is an official victim of trafficking. Ricardo eventually escaped through the ventilation hatch of the truck, but even this took more than a year of this forced labor that citizens actively supported because of the consumption of Florida tomatoes increasing, while Ricardo’s quality of life decreased.
The debate of the benefits or inhumanity of slavery may continue for centuries to come as it did in the past, but the larger effects of this this ___ topic needs to be spread through societies around the world in order to decrease the role and effects of slavery in the world and economy today. Though in the past there have been influential people who succeeded at removing a small part of slavery in small parts of the world, slavery is still an issue today and it needs to be recognized of its significance in the world.
