Some people believe that art is a beautiful painting or an elaborate sculpture. Others believe art is an expression of one's feelings shown in some sort of physical way. Merriam-Webster defines art as “the conscious use of skill and creative imagination especially in the production of aesthetic objects”. The Oxford Dictionary defines art as “the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power”. Many of these debaters think that modern art can be done without any talent or effort. The debaters say that an individual could just splash some paint on a canvas and call it art, which is true. Art is art as long as it is expressing creativity, emotion, and imagination. However, many artists put a lot of time and effort into their artwork. For example, Vincent van Gogh’s “Starry Night” couldn’t have been thrown together last second. Van Gogh obviously put a lot of time and effort into his painting. Another example of modern art is Jackson Pollock’s “Autumn Rhythm: Number 30”. At first glance, the painting looks like a bunch of scribbles on a canvas. A deeper look into the meaning and the title of the painting tells a different story. Pollock put a lot of effort into making this abstract painting. He created many colored layers and types of lines to show the balance between control and chance in nature.
