Mahatma Gandhi, arguably one of the most influential activists, once said “the greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated (18).” And if this is true than we are in some trouble. As stated before the AWA was created in order to prevent horrific cases of mistreatments of animals, including animals in laboratories. A story posted to the Des Moines Register, part of the USA Today network, describes a fur farm in Des Moines, Iowa where officials found the farm to be forcing its animals to live in sweltering heat and maggot-infested filth. In the cartoon one mouse is made very smart and wants to take over the world while the other is clearly not as smart. One of the biggest questions: is it really necessary to take the lives of animals in the name of science and for the betterment of humanity? PETA pressures labs into halting experiments because they believe that animals are not to be used by humans for "food, clothing, entertainment, or to experiment on" (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals 1). Its stance is that any testing is painful, inhumane, and unnecessary when alternatives are available. The PETA website says that "animals, like humans, have interests that cannot be sacrificed or traded away simply because it might benefit others." (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals 2-3). Essentially, PETA is of the opinion that animals and humans should have identical rights. In their press releases PETA puts out pictures of rabbits with open flesh wounds and dogs with rashes on their skins--all in an attempt to disgust people into sympathy for their cause. A factory farm is a place where animals are packed into spaces so tight that they can hardly move. They are forced into cages so small that the animals can’t even turn around. Many of these animals have no access to the outdoors and they spend most of their lives in cages or pens. This type of treatment can cause severe and mental distress. Many would agree that this type of treatment is animal cruelty, but why are there so few laws to protect these animals? Every year, animals raised for meat, dairy and egg industries are among the most abused in the United States. Many of the abusive tactics used on farm animals would be illegal to do to dogs or cats. These farm animals are inhumanly slaughtered, tortured and killed. In some cases before these animals get to the slaughter house they suffer brutally cruel treatment that has been legal for the most part. One of these practices is of shoving a pipe down the throat of a duck or goose to force feed the animal several times a day. One example of the abuse that goes on inside these factory farms is a practice called 'debeaking'.
