Courage is resistance to fear. Mildred D. Taylor in her book, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, uses the main character, Cassie, to show courage. Cassie and her family have gone through some tough times that they have to get through. Cassie shows courage through when she was the bigger person to Lillian Jean in Strawberry, when she stands up to her teacher for Little Man, and when she helped T.J. In the book Cassie showed her attitude and how she wasn’t as afraid as she thought she was. How would you feel if someone shoved you and you had to apologize to the person who shoved you? Cassie went to Strawberry and got shoved into the road by Lillian Jean Simms. Cassie had to apologize, even though she was the one being shoved. Lillian Jean is white, and Cassie is black, so Cassie was the one who was misfortunate and had to apologize. “A painful tear slid down my cheek and my lips trembled. “I’m sorry . . . M-Mis . . . Cassie decided to stand up for her little brother, Little Man, as he was about to get a bad whooping. Little Man got his school books and saw that they were dirty and had been passed down from white schools. By the time the books got to Little Man’s school, the books were old and messed up. Little Man and Cassie got upset about the blacks getting the hand-me downs instead of brand new books. Little Man almost got a whooping for standing up to the teacher and not wanting the books. Cassie stood up and defended him. “I-I said may I have another book please, ma’am” he squeaked. “That one’s dirty.” (23) It took Cassie a lot of courage to stand up for her little brother and almost get a whooping, that day she discovered a little bit about the black and white
Gloria Skurzynski’s “Nethergrave” is a superior work of science fiction compared to Ray Bradbury's "A Sound of Thunder" because it has a more important theme, has better characterization, and is much more original. To elaborate in other words, Nethergrave artistically conveys a meaningful message through a distinct story while A Sound of Thunder bluntly restates a generic idea.
How would you feel if you had a brother who got mad at something that offends him and he gets in trouble? What if you knew why he was mad? In Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, Cassie faces the same situation. Cassie was willing to get a beating for her brother, Little Man. Little Man looked at the book and asked for a new one, but when he opened the book, he was so mad that he threw it at the ground and stomped on it. But Cassie did not understand why he did this until she looked at the front page too. ““Miz Crocker”, I said, “I don’t want my book neither.””(Cassie, pg. 27) This shows that Cassie is willing to stand up for what's right, but sometimes the truth hurts.
In this memoir, the meaning of language is intertwined with the search for self-identity. This book was focused on an experience of perusing her own heritage by the use of DNA and genomics. In Raquel’s instance, or Rachael as her friends refer to her as, language has become a force of conflict and discrimination. Raquel wants to fit in with her peers and uses language as a means to relate. “Rachael, if you call me nigga one more time, I’m going to have to fuck you up” (pg. 71). It is this conversation that causes racial tension between Raquel and her friends. She tries to explain that they are all women of color, regardless of how much darker their skin is than hers. Her friends can’t seem to understand why she likes all that “black shit” (pg. 71) referring to her like of hip hop music. Another issue regarding culture and ethnicity occurs with Raquel’s encounter with Simon, who uses discriminatory comments as a joke. Raquel, who finds great offense to it, takes this use of vulgar language personally. The role of language within this novel displays the hardships and struggles of growing up as an immigrant adolescent in the United States. It emphasizes the racial discrimination and adaptation aspect as well. However, despite all of the hatred and uncertainty Raquel possesses, she begins to develop resilience,
Janie’s first discovery about herself comes when she is a child. She is around the age of six when she realizes that she is colored. Janie’s confusion about her race is based on the reasoning that all her peers and the kids she grows up with are white. Janie and her Nanny live in the backyard of the white people that her Nanny works for. When Janie does not recognize herself on the picture that is taken by a photographer, the others find it funny and laughs, leaving Janie feeling humiliated. This racial discovery is not “social prejudice or personal meanness but affection” (Cooke 140). Janie is often teased at school because she lives with the white people and dresses better than the other colored kids. Even though the kids that tease her were all colored, this begins Janie’s experience to racial discrimination.

In the book Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry by Mildred D Taylor, Jeremy showed Stacey that not all white children are rude and blunt to black children and in return Stacey was actually showing Jeremy that it pays off to be nice. Even when Lillian Jean told Jeremy to stay away from Stacey that did not stop the friends from getting together. Even when Papa and T.J told Stacey that Jermey that did not stop him from anything. That proves that kindness will always win in the end.
While watching Atticus during the trial, Scout learned a lot about her father. She learned that he was more than just an ordinary man to the Negroes. He was defending Tom Robinson, which meant a lot to them, because not many white people in the county would do a thing like that. Very few, if any, white men would defend a black man in a trial in a segregated county during the 1930’s. Because of what Atticus did more people, both white and black, gained respect for him. Scout saw that to the neighborhood people, Atticus was a very wise man, and a very good man, also. While Scout was watching from he balcony, she saw her father do something she had never seen. He told Bob Ewell to write his name on a sheet of paper. Scout saw that Bob was left handed, so he couldn’t have beaten up Mayella, because her black eye was on the right side of her face.
All it takes is an angry mob of people to destroy ones life. In the story Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor, a black family has to wrongfully face discrimination and unfairness everyday in small town Strawberry, Mississippi. One night, Papa is forced to make a life or death decision by starting a wildfire. The fire was started on his cotton field. This fire helped to prevent the hanging of three people, T.J., Mr. Morrison, and Papa. It is important to keep it a secret that he started the fire, or terrible things will happen to him. He was right to start the fire because it did the unthinkable at the time: he got the blacks and whites to work together.
Courage is not something that we are born with, it is a skill that takes time to learn and only a few are lucky enough to have it. To Kill a Mockingbird is not only about life in a world full of hate, it is about standing up for anyone’s beliefs being brave enough to do it. In this story, Harper Lee says “Courage is not a man with a gun in his hand. It's knowing you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do” (Lee 112). In To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee illustrates courage through Atticus Finch, Mrs. Dubose, and Arthur Radley.
In the book, the readers see the wall between black and white people during the movement. An example is a reaction to Fern’s doll which is white, while Fern, however, is black. On pg.65, it reads, “‘Li’l Sis, are you a white girl or a black girl?’ Fern said, ‘I’m a colored girl.’ He didn’t like the sound of a colored girl,’ He said, ‘Black girl.’ Fern said, ‘Colored.’ ‘Black girl.”
When the black school was given books the teacher, Miss Crocker states, “Now we’re very fortunate to get these readers…” Since the superintendent didn’t ever give the black school books, Miss Crocker thought that the books were one of the greatest things that they could receive.
In The Lesson, Toni Cade Bambara recounts black life of the New York Harlem in the 1960s. She uses fiction to portray the real life situations of black children in that area. The purpose of this story is to send a message of the reality of the circumstances that black peoples faced in this time by deriving from her own experiences and from the civil rights movement of the time. She tells this story from the viewpoint of a young girl living in Harlem to showcase how the inequality of lifestyles not only affects children, but leaves a lasting impression. Critical race theory is categorically explored because the time period of this piece of writing is of a time when inequality and segregation were still glaringly common and accepted.
Have you ever been mistreated for being just you? Back in the 1930’s there was a Black household named the Logans, who all worked hard in order to pay taxes, their loan to the bank and to just survive daily life. This household faces many obstacles every day, but they never stop being a family and trying to protect what is theirs. “You ain’t never had to live on nobody’s place but your own and as I live and the family survives, you’ll never have to,” Papa tells Cassie (Taylor 7). Students in middle school should read Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor because it teaches life lessons, demonstrates hardships Blacks faced and is inspirational.
