The Aztec Indians created a great civilization in Central Mexico, reaching its peak in the 1500’s. Being late arrivals to the area, and because of their strong neighboring nations, they were forced to live in the swampy western areas of the Lake Texcoco. On August 16, 1984 an international conference regarding population was held in Mexico City. It was at this conference that the Reagan Administration implemented the “Mexico City Policy”, also known and the Global Gag Rule. This policy stated that Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) would be prohibited from receiving United States funds if they performed, promoted, referred or counseled patients on abortion. The funds would be withheld from the NGOs even if the money used for abortion services were non-U.S. funds. This policy was in effect from 1984-1993 when president Bill Clinton came into office. On January 22, 2001 president George Bush reinstated the Mexico City Policy. There has been much debate over whether the policy is helping or hurting those abroad. Many people in the United States are not aware that the Mexico City Policy is in effect, or even what it is. It is very important that people here are aware of how the government is controlling health care and women’s rights in other countries.
Relations between the United States and Mexico have become increasingly strained, due in part to American’s contribution to ever-growing cartel violence in Mexico. The United States has been the main contributor to the cartels’ takeover of Mexico, and the current policy approach of limiting the United State’s role has failed. History has exhibited our inability to make peace with Mexico, and without considerable reform to our approach to the “War on Drugs” relations between the countries will not improve.
The food service department consists of several components. The most prosperous of the components is the Mexican food deli, followed only shortly by the bakery. The Mexican food that is prepared right in front of you consists of tacos, burritos, tostadas, quesadillas, nachos, and about any other type of Mexican food one could think of. The bakery is awesome. Mexico has experienced many reforms economically, socially, and politically in recent history leading itself into becoming a more well developed country. Typically, when people think of Mexico they think of the corruption in the government, the violent drug cartels, the widespread poverty, and the long time one party dominance of the government. Although these are major problems, they are not problems that are impossible to fix, or are currently being fixed. They are not persistent all throughout Mexico either, there are places where poverty, violent drug cartels, and corruption is non existent. Mexico is often misunderstood and generalized for a few flaws and characteristics it possesses. By the previously accepted definition, Mexico is a third world country. But by today's terms countries are either developing or developed, and Mexico is often seen as a developing country despite it containing many qualities that would lead it to being a developed country.
Growing up with a Mexican heritage, I am now accustomed to Hispanic culture. The variations of my native culture include attire, beliefs, customs, and food. As I matured, have developed my own preferences among what I partake interest upon, food for instance. A few of the dishes would include arroz con frijoles (rice and beans), tacos, carnitas (pork), chorizo, barbacoa, tamales, and carne de asada (roast meat). If I was to pick out my favorite entrees, it would be arroz (rice), frijoles (beans), and carne de asada (beef), from El Milagro, seeing that they have a better flavor than other restaurants I have been to.
Mexican food is usually spicy from peppers that grow in Mexico’s hot climate. The main foods that Mexico produces and make the main element of their dishes are beans, cactus, avocado squash and fruit. These are typically in every or on the side of every Mexican dish because this is home grown food that the Mexican choose to show off. In contrast Cuban food is less spicy than Mexican cuisine and Cuban cuisine isn’t usually fried. Cuban food also leans towards using their home grown food such as; rice being one of the main crops grown also plantains, bananas, mangoes, mamoncillos, and coconut and plenty more tropical fruit because of the tropical climate. For the Cubans it's almost mandatory to have a fruit or vegetable on the plate when serving.
