The United States health care industry has been fighting the increased use of Medical Marijuana as a treatment for different diseases. Recent research suggests that diseases like AIDS/HIV, Alzheimer’s, Arthritis, Cancer, Crohn’s disease, Glaucoma, Multiple sclerosis and Epilepsy can be helped with Medical Marijuana. Therefore, given this information, federal government and states should lessen the restrictions on the usage of medical marijuana to help treat different diseases. Alcohol and Opiates were two of the most widely used substances for pain before Medical Marijuana. People that used opiates as a form of self-medication usually get addicted to them. Medical Marijuana can only be bought for people over 21 and medical marijuana is still illegal to use in public. Robert Gilbson states “Nobody under the age of 21 can buy it, it’s still illegal to consume it in public and getting caught while driving under the influence of cannabis will still result in a DUI charge”(Huffington post). Medical Marijuana is only prescribed to responsible people that are mature enough to follow the laws that applies to it. Marijuana can be additive if a person does not have the willpower to overcome the addiction. “The psychological addiction of marijuana is seen as less severe and hence manageable, needing only a good dose of willpower to get over it. But, the psychological craving can be stronger than the physical withdrawal. The brain wants what it wants, when it wants it and for some these cravings are overwhelming” (Psychology today). Marijuana can be additive like any other drug but the addiction is easier manageable than other drugs. A person needs the willpower to overcome the addiction and the symptoms that goes with it. Studies have shown that cognitive performance is not related to marijuana. Each year 12.7 million people discover they have cancer and 7.6 million people die from the disease. Medical Marijuana can help people with cancer live a more comfortable life. A person cannot usually eat while undergoing chemotherapy because of the nausea and vomiting. “A number of small studies of smoked marijuana found that it can be helpful in treating nausea and vomiting from cancer chemotherapy” (Cancer). Medical Marijuana may help a person going though chemotherapy regain their appetite a little. THC and CBD slow growth and/or cause death in certain types of cancer cells. A study by the University of London reported that THC and other cannabinoids such as CBD helps to ‘dramatically reduce’ the growth of new brain cancer cells (AACR). People that do cannabinoids that have brain cancer can reduce the amount of tumors on their brain. Epilepsy is most common in younger children and older adults. Epilepsy is a lifelong struggle that challenges and affects many areas in life. When someone with Epilepsy tires medical marijuana the rate they have seizures decreases. “Seizures decreased by an average of 54% in 137 people who completed 12 weeks on Epidiolex” (Epilepsy).
