Marijuana refers to the dried up leaves, flowers, stems and seeds from a hemp plant. Marijuana is commonly used by younger people, and the amount of people who believe it is harmful decreases every year. The cannabinoids in marijuana are what affect the brain, and they can be extremely powerful. These cannabinoids have many different effects on the body when used and can regulate pleasure, memory, thinking, concentration, body movement, time management, appetite, and pain (Kosher). The U.S Food and Drug Administration has not yet approved or recognized marijuana as a medicine. This is because the FDA is required to do many clinical studies on a large scale. Marijuana use is high among laborers who use it to relieve fatigue after a long day’s work as well as stimulate hunger to ensure they eat. The main active cannabinoid in cannabis is delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol which is also known as THC is what increases the appetite as well as having many other effects. This effect is known as the munchies and helps people who have problems eating, and gaining weight. People with AIDS- related wasting syndrome who smoke marijuana have been able to maintain their weight easier in comparison to though who do not smoke the substance. THC also does a number of other things such as reducing nausea, decreasing pain, reducing inflammation, as well as helping certain muscle control problems. Studies from the University of Colarado have been done comparing people who were experiencing pain who had cancer, placing some people on medical marijuana, and others on a placebo, and results came back that marijuana helped very much. Marijuana also has been used for cancer patients experiencing nausea from chemotherapy. Marijuana not only helps people with cancer though, but also has proven to help people with glaucoma and multiple sclerosis. THC in marijuana has helped many people, but this is not the only beneficial chemical contained in marijuana. If marijuana were legalized, it is though that the amount of drug related crime would decrease, and the amount of money to be made off of marijuana would be outstandingly high. For example, Colorado has made over 184 million dollars off the taxes of marijuana. Another example of a state making good money off taxing the sales of marijuana would be “California’s 2013 marijuana harvest for example, [which was worth $31 billion, and if recreational use of marijuana is legalized, a large portion of the annual marijuana harvest will begin generating tax revenues for the state] (Harper 2). This is an insane amount of money that can help the state tremendously. If Illinois did this, it would decrease the amount of sales of illegal marijuana on the black market, and the state would be able to tax these
