Introduction The purpose of this paper is to critically evaluate the media’s portrayal of forensic anthropology in the TV show ‘Bones’, compared to what it is in real life. It is important to evaluate an episode of ‘Bones’, due to the growing effect of media on society. TV shows romanticizing forensic anthropology can give people who do not have real forensic knowledge, like the jury, unrealistic expectations in real life cases that involve the expertise of forensic anthropologists and cloud their judgments. The method to be used to evaluate the episode is triangulation of sources using lecture notes, textbooks, and peer reviewed journals on forensic anthropology. In ‘The feet on the beach’ episode, the focus are the eight pairs of severed feet washed up by a flood (Charles & Levisetti, 2011). Seven pairs of feet were identified to be part of the collection of a body farm of a local university and one pair was from a murder victim due to its unnatural disarticulation from the body which means there was an indication that the feet were cut off (Charles & Levisetti, 2011). Upon analysis of the marks on the bones, they found out what kind of tool was used to cut the feet off which led to the culprit’s identity (Charles & Levisetti, 2011). Role of Forensic Anthropologists in Death Investigations The portrayal of forensic anthropology in ‘The feet on the beach’ is inaccurate because forensic anthropologists are depicted to be involved in other aspects of the crime scene investigation aside from aspects that require anthropological expertise (Wood, 2017a). Similar to Dr. Brennan who is a forensic anthropologist in the show, forensic anthropologists in real life works closely with the police and the coroner when the remains being dealt with are unrecognizable (Wood, …show more content…

The show portrays that forensic anthropologists are responsible for almost every aspect of the death investigation, which does not correctly depict the role of forensic anthropologists (Wood,2017a). The method of which components of the biological profile, like sex of the remains, is also incorrectly portrayed as Dr. Brennan estimated the sex using a trait that does not accurately indicate sexual dimorphism (Wood, 2017c). Lastly, the complexity of personal identification, which is one of the most important aspects of forensic anthropology casework (Krishan et al, 2016), is not portrayed correctly as Dr. Brennan and her team based the identification of the remains on one trait that has questionable reliability (Charles & Levisetti, 2011).
