No longer is the makeup world considered solely for women. Yes, men have been wearing makeup in the entertainment business, in the drag community as well as around the globe in communities such as korean pop. However, men wearing makeup casually has become an increasingly common and accepted practice in the United States. Not only are there male makeup artists but men who wear makeup themselves. One can search youtube and easily come across men who share their tutorials on their “everyday makeup look.”

Recently CoverGirl signed their first male CoverGirl, social media star James Charles. Charles started his makeup journey on instagram and gained over 400,000 followers in just one year. He currently has over 1.4 million.

Popular youtube star Manny Gutierrez,more well known as Manny MUA, is a male beauty vlogger. He posts content on several social media outlets about all things beauty including tutorials of his makeup looks and reviews of makeup products on Youtube. Gutierrez believes makeup is genderless. He uses his platform to fight the stigma behind male makeup wearers.

Gutierrez has over 2.3 million subscribers on Youtube with over 100 million views and over 3.2 million followers on Instagram so to say his reach is wide would be an understatement.

Maybelline recently appointed Gutierrez as the brand’s newest ambassador making him their first male campaign star.

Tahseen Munshi, a UGA alumnus, is very immersed in the makeup world and watches male makeup gurus on Youtube like Gutierrez and Charles regularly. The biology and psychology grad believes makeup is for everyone.

“Everyone deserves to feel beautiful. Makeup can help promote self- esteem and make someone feel more comfortable with the way they look,” Munshi says.

Still, even with this support, Gutierrez and Charles still receive backlash from those who aren’t accepting of the shift in the beauty …show more content…

“If somebody doesn’t like me behind the keyboard, oh, well. Everybody has the right to their own opinion. I’ll just continue to do me.”

Munshi feels that men should be able to wear makeup without judgement, but understands that not everyone is ok with it.

“I think that anyone should be free to express themselves in any way they desire. But some people are uncomfortable with it, and that's ok...To me, makeup is makeup. If it looks beautiful, it simply looks beautiful. Regardless of one's gender.”

On the other hand, Madison Pilgrim, a third-year marketing major from Newnan, Ga, knows there are individuals who don’t agree with men wearing makeup but doesn’t believe it’s ok.

“I think that they don't have a right to say whether or not a man can express himself with makeup,” Pilgrim says. “It's not their body, so they shouldn't have any say in what the man wants to do to it.”

Both Munshi and Pilgrim agree that there is still a stigma with men who wear makeup casually, especially with straight
