All About Eve is based on a story written by Mary Orr. Mary Orr wrote “The Wisdom of Eve” in the International Cosmopolitan Magazine based on real life events. After Joseph L. Mankiewicz read the story, he immediately fell in love with it because it was his way of “settling a lot scores [with the theatre]” (Crowther). He bought the rights to the movie and began casting. According to Mankiewicz, casting for Margo Channing was the hardest; after a lot of thinking, Mankiewicz chose Claudette Colbert as Margo, but two weeks before shooting began Colbert was on bed rest due to an accident during the filming of another movie. Because she was the only available actress that could play the part well, Mankiewicz selected Bette Davis as the new Margo. Bette Davis was perfect for the role. Bette Davis, like Margo her onscreen character, was a 40 year old actress who was insecure about her role in filmography due to her age. After Darryl F Zanuck received the script, he decided to make it his personal production. While reviewing the script, Zanuck came across a line in the Addison’s narration in the beginning of the movie that said “more of Eve later. All about Eve, in fact”; this spurred the idea of naming the movie All About Eve.
The movie exhibited the time in which it was made. The fifties were a time of glamour, prosperity, and entertainment; people coveted the highest standard of living. The movie presented these similarities in the grandeur of the wardrobe and jewelry that the characters wore. Smoking and drinking was a customary practice in the fifties and in the movie. This book is about a girl name Ellen Foster who is ten years old. Her mother committed suicide by over dosing on her medication. When Ellen tried to go look for help for her mother her father stopped her. He told them that if she looked for helped he would kill them both. After her mother died she was left under her fathers custody. Her father was a drunk. He would physically and mentally abuse her. Ellen was forced to pay bills, go grocery shopping, cook for herself, and do everything else for herself. Ellen couldn't take it any more so she ran away her friends house. Starletta and her parents lived in a small cabin with one small bathroom. One day at school a teacher found a bruise on Ellen's arm. She sends Ellen to live with Julia the school's art teacher. Julia had a husband named Roy. They were both hippies. Julia and Roy cared a lot about Ellen. After Ellen turned 11 years old she was forced to go live with her grandmother. Ellen didn't want to leave Julia and Roy but her grandmother had won custody. Her grandmother was a cruel old lady. Ellen spends the summer with her grandmother. Living with her makes her very unhappy. Since her grandmother owns farmland she forces Ellen to work on the field with her black servants. Ellen meets a black woman named Mavis. Mavis and her become good friends. Mavis would talk about how she knew Ellen's mother and how much Ellen resembled her mother. Her grandmother didn't think the same. She thought that Ellen resembled her father. She also hated that man. Her grandmother would often compare her with her father. Her grandmother would torture her because she wanted revenge from her father. Her grandmother also blames her for the death of her mother. While Ellen was staying with her grandmother her father died. When her father died she didn't feel sad because she had always fantasized about killing her father. Ellen just felt a distant sadness. Ellen cried just a little bit. Her grandmother was furious because Ellen showed some emotions. She told her to never cry again. After that Ellen becomes scarred for a long time. One day her uncle Rudolph bought the flag that had been on Ellen's father's casket. Her grandmother turns him away. Later that day she burned the flag.
Eve does exactly what God commanded her to not do. Now that I have explained the main things a bout both stories I will continue by discussing the main themes and symbols that are existent in both stories.
Discriminating gender roles throughout the movie leaves one to believe if they are supposed to act a certain way. This film gives women and men roles that don’t exist anymore, during the 60s women were known to care for the family and take care of the house, basically working at home. However, a male was supposed to fight for his family, doing all the hard work so his wife didn’t have too. In today’s world, everyone does what makes them happy. Warren Beatty was the main character in this film. Virginia Hill was Bugsy’s love interest. These two actors did a wonderful job of acting in a manner congruent with the times of the 40’s. The cast was sprinkled with tremendous talent such as Harvey Keitel, Ben Kingsley, and Elliot Gould. As a whole I think the cast did a magnificent job taking the viewers to an era of America, which is not easily forgotten by those who lived through it. A time when the world was being destroyed by the Nazi Germans was over shadowed by America’s self-involvement. A time when Americans were beginning to be proud of their little world power was accented by the world war.

Throughout this film Mankiewicz writes witty dialogue for all the characters, which adds to the comedic aspect of the film. Therefore, this is one of the most genius parts of this film, where the audience can clearly see the banter back and forth between the characters. Although this film's plot can contain one cliche tropes, it was the first of this kinds, since most modern films just regurgitate those classic tropes. ‘Betrayal’, A word that is harsh and yet it still exists in this world. Betrayal is a damaging force that leaves many peoples paths ruin. “The Wisdom of Eve” is a short story by Mary Orr, which is about how a friend betrays another friend. “I'm going on a trip. I’m heading to Reno to get a divorce… Eve had found the time to get engaged to a famous playwright. She’s going to marry my husband, Lloyd Richards” (Orr 295). People don’t expect someone who they care about or someone who cares about them to betray them. In the journal article “When Another Lesbian Betrays You”, by Assanti Ta’Shia declares that “Betrayal can slam us into an emotional prison that will take us years of therapy to get out” (1). Loss of confidence in knowing who can be trusted, emotional well being, and self- protection are what people feel after they’ve been betrayed.
The creation story takes a place in a very beautiful garden that was called later “Eden.” In the beginning of the story, Adam begins his life alone with the other animals. By the time God creates him a helper and unfortunately, she is a woman. Adam have no clue in how to treat this woman, he never experienced living with a human. While Adam was struggling and trying to figure out how to live with this woman and how to treat her, Eve had a plenty of time to understand this life and the purpose of living. The last two lines of this speech are very dramatic. Eve has such a great love for Adam that she could endure anything as long as he would be by her side, but she would be nothing without him. However, this creates a paradox. One may ask, if Eve loves Adam as much as she professes to, then why put his life in jeopardy just to make her own suffering more bearable? The answer, of course, goes back to the selfishness that has pervaded her entire speech. These lines stand out because of the spondees at the end of both of them.
