Mary Ann Evans was an English novelist, journalist, and translator which was well-known by her pen name George Eliot. She is one of the leading writers of the
Victoria era. She has written seven novels that are known in world of literature.
These are including Adam Bede (1859), Daniel Deronda (1876), The Mill on the
Floss (1860), Silas Marner (1861), Middle March (1871), Romola (1863), and
Felix Holt, the Radical (1866). One of the most prominent factor in these novels is their realism and psychological insight. In her works she used a male pen name for that people read her works and also to ensure her works to be taken seriously.
Another reason for using pen name was the scandle of living with the married

She was the second child of Robert Evans (1773-1849) and Christiana Evan (1788-1836), the daughter of a local mill-owner. Her complete siblings were Christiana, known as Chrissey (1814-1859), Issac (1816-1890), and twin brothers who lived a few days in March 1821. She also had a step-brother,
Robert (1802-1864), and a step-sister, Fanny (1805-1882), from her father’s previous marriage to Harriet Poynton (1780-1809) (Ashton, 1997). Maria Lewis instructed her. In the religious condition of the Miss Franklin’s school, Evans was displayed to a quiet, disciplined opinion opposed to evangelicasm. After age sixteen, Eliot had little formal education. She was very thankful to her father for allowing her access to the library of Arbuny Hall, which helped her self-education and learning.
