Proud to be an American America, the land of the free. The United States of America is a country that is seen by the majority of the world as a haven or economical hub. Social classes, race, religion, and culture, all in one melting pot of a nation. Freedom is what sets the U.S. apart from any other country. The 20th century dawned new reformations in society. The civil rights movement changed the country for minority groups in particular, people have been rightfully given opportunities they deserve. The most notorious contender in the Civil Rights movement was the leader Martin Luther King Jr. MLK jr. was a baptist minister born in Atlanta, Georgia. He was most notably remembered for his speech in Washington D.C. named the I Have a Dream speech on August 28th, 1963. Over 250,000 people gathered on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial as he presented this defining message. His rhetoric was phenomenal. Racial segregation was extremely prominent especially in the American south. Whites were separated from colored people in just about every activity imaginable. Store owners wouldn’t allow sales to any colored persons. It’s hard to imagine our country like that in today’s world. We are successfully working towards the total termination of racism. Freedom of speech is a staple in this nation. When being asked “Do you believe in the freedom of speech” most Americans would say affirmatively say yes. There is a contradiction to what people say they believe is okay and what isn’t. For instance, if there is a topic that is sensitive to some people, like a hate group holding meetings, more Americans today would be a bit more standoffish as to agree that what those groups are doing deserves to be backed by The Constitution.
