Introduction Leading comes in many forms; Philip Purcell, Sumner Redstone, and Martha Stewart have their ways of doing it. Great leaders are able to find a way that works for them and go with it; great leaders are able to work on their strengths and succeed. There isn’t one way to lead to have success, there are plenty of styles that could be applied to help move towards success; Coercive/Commanding, Authoritative/Visionary, Affiliative, Democratic, Coaching, and Pacesetting. Coercive/Commanding is a style of leadership that is demanding and expects subordinates to listen. His willingness to succeed would always allow him to do things that people never thought he could do. “He displayed no excessive genius as a youngster; but, as he grew older, he steadily evolved into a compulsive overachiever” (Heberling & Houghton, 2002, p. 101). Those types of individuals have worked so hard to prove people wrong continuously throughout their lives that it may make it hard for them to listen or even be open with others; which may lead to his type of leadership style. “Mr. Purcell’s leadership style is described by a former colleague as autocratic and bureaucratic” (Man overboard, 2001). There isn’t a perfect way to lead and while some may be stubborn to certain ways, eventually it will be tested and the ultimate answer comes through the success of that leader. Philip Purcell led with a coercive style; demanding his way was the way. Sumner Redstone believed in empowering his employees and allowing them to be a part of the success; he led using a democratic style. Lastly, Martha Stewart was old school and always gave direct orders and expected them to be followed; she led using the authoritative style.
