Could you imagine living without the sun? The short story “All Summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury describes a girl named Margot who gets treated in a way that she shouldn’t have been treated. She ends up missing a chance to experience a rare event. Margot and her classmates live underground on the planet Venus, where the sun only shines once every seven years. Other than that, the planet experiences endless rain. Margot, the main character, knows she is different from her classmates. She does not play with her classmates and has always stood alone. Margot is the only one out of her classmates that remembers the feeling of the sun, and without it she has become depressed. Some could also argue that the lack of sun made Margot depressed, but there is more evidence that shows her isolation was caused by her class’ jealousy. Her depression is hinted in the quote, “She was a frail girl who looked as if she had been lost in the rain for years and the rain had washed out the blue from her eyes and the red from her mouth and the yellow from her hair. She was an old photograph dusted from an album, whitened away, and if she spoke at all her voice would be a ghost.” (Bradbury, 1954) These sentences show that Margot is “faded” like an old photograph, and that she is sorrowful. Margot is depressed and it is shown throughout the story, especially in these quotes. The author uses both similes and metaphors to help the reader understand and get to know Margot’s personality more. Margot’s isolation is shown in the quote, “And this was because she would play no games with them in the echoing tunnels of the underground city.” (Bradbury, 1954) This quote reveals that Margot is different from the other kids in her class, and is usually distant from her peers. The author uses this sentence to emphasize this fact. These quotes are significant because it gives the reader an understanding of the main character, Margot. An example of Margot being harassed by the kids can be found in the quote, “They surged about her, caught her up and bore her, protesting, and then pleading, and then crying, back into a tunnel, a room, a closet, where they slammed and locked the door.” (Bradbury, 1954) This quote shows when the childrens’ jealousy took control of their actions and made them do something they did not intend to do. Their envy and anger got ahead of them. The author uses a long sentence to signify that this section of the story is crucial. This quote is significant because it is a perfect example of their jealousy making them do actions they might not have intended to do. The classmates were jealous that Margot remembered the sun, causing them to deny everything she says and mistreat
