The concept of manhood to show how men commit acts of violence to prove their manhood and protect their dignity. In Macbeth the men are blinded by the need for power and end up using brutality to gain it. And in Things Fall Apart men are pressured into committing acts of violence to prove that they are men. In Macbeth and Things Fall Apart manhood is shown throughout by men being pressured into committing acts of violence, and is used to develop the theme that when people are too focused on society's expectations of manhood it leads to destruction.

In the book, Okonkwo is trying to prove that he can command his village and keep the power from the white missionaries. His village pressures him to take back the power from the whites. All of the villagers, and members of the clan, try to reason with peaceful ideas which leads to the disgust of Okonkwo. "Let us not reason like cowards,’ said Okonkwo. ‘If a man comes into my hut and defecates on the floor, what do I do? Do I shut my eyes? No! I take a stick and break his head That is what a man does. These people are daily pouring filth over us, and Okeke says we should pretend not to see.’ Okonkwo made a sound full of disgust. This was a womanly clan, he thought. Such a thing could never happen in his fatherland, Umuofia.” This shows how Okonkwo pressures himself and others into taking action against the whites because it is what a “true man” would do, which ends up leading to lots of blood and violence. By having Okonkwo insist that brutal force is the only way to deal with problems, and resort to urging people that the, stereotypical, man's role in society of being the tough, powerful protector of his family helps to portray the way gender roles are set up and viewed in the village. In Macbeth, the roles of gender roles and how they can affect the decision making of people is shown through acts of violence commited to prove one's worth. Whereas in Things Fall Apart, the men of the village are pressured by the leader, who pressures himself, to not act peacefully or reason when others try to take your land, but instead launch brutal attacks to prove that they are not messing with children, but full grown men. Overall, the part that gender roles has in each piece of literature is due to society having certain standards for people and how they are supposed to
