According to Niccolo Machiavelli, The Prince, The first duty of a prince is to maintain power and acquire more. What does this mean? What is duty and what is power? If the princes of Machiavelli’s time followed his advice and searched only for power, what does this mean for the people? The first priority of a prince or ruler should be to better the people and to protect them. Machiavelli stated that one’s duty, as a prince is to be as powerful as can be, but as a ruler the first priority should be the people, and as a prince, to be selfless, good, and wise. Machiavelli hinted in his strong statement of duty, that the princes of his time should put their selfish desires ahead of the people’s welfare. He didn’t care about the people. He’d rather them cower in fear so one could easily rule them. To prove this, Machiavelli said, “since love and fear can hardly exist together, if we must choose between them, it is far safer to be feared than loved.” While this may be easier for the ruler, to not have to bother, this is a completely selfish motive. Machiavelli was only looking for power for himself. He wanted the people to not be a bother so he could focus on his own selfish desires. Many rulers in the past reverted to corrupt ways of attaining power. When a kingdom is given a king or queen who reverted in horrible ways to get there, the kingdom has already fallen. The person in power would already have the stress to keep his or her position and could easily become heartless and vain. A most commonly used way of attaining more power would be to conquer nearby villages and kingdoms. The constant distance of king and kingdom can be unnerving for the people. For example, if there were an outburst of a plague or a riot. Where are the king and military to protect and direct a solution? Will he leave his home unprotected?
