Having pursued relevant projects, courses and considering my inherent ability, I find myself interested in life sciences and more specifically in Microbiology. I believe that pursuing Masters in Microbial Biotechnology at North Carolina State University will help me widen my knowledge, hone my technical and managerial skills and provide me an opportunity to be a part of the cutting edge research in the field and contribute to its growth in Industry.
Consistently a top student in school, I developed an interest in science and technology, particularly during the formative years of my schooling. Ranking among the top 0.8% of about 0.45 million applicants to qualify for Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) entrance exam, I chose Biotechnology as my undergraduate majors. Over the last four years in IIT, I have developed a fascination for life sciences. Throughout my undergraduate study, I have taken up a rigorous curriculum and maintained a cumulative GPA of 9.25/10 in my majors and stood among the top five students. Courses on Molecular biology and genetic engineering, Animal biotechnology, Microbiology, Systems Biology, Immunology, Gene therapy enhanced my understanding and my appreciation of the depth and scope of biotechnology. These courses challenged me to determine which experimental approaches were most appropriate to test specific hypothesis rather than memorizing the equations or reactions, and laboratory sessions granted me ample scope to test these. My research projects and the relevant courses spurred my specific interest in Microbiology. I have made efforts to make myself conversant in the field by following journals like Clinical Microbiology Review and Current Topics in Microbiology ...

...st four years, my undergraduate training and my proactive attempts at gaining research experience have made me sample various flavors of research. I know that graduate school will not be easy, and my experiences have taught me that research will be a roller coaster ride at times. And also my interactions with some of the eminent professors in academia and lab technicians from industry have taught me the roles that collaboration and teamwork play in successful completion of a research project. With my desire to learn and my sense of commitment to all my undertakings, I am confident that I will be able to perform well in graduate school and strive to succeed in my future endeavors.
I thank you for considering my application for graduate study at North Carolina State University. I am looking forward to be a part of your esteemed University.

...rt of my undergraduate preparation. I hope to make some substantial progress on my project with Dr. Pellegrini and have presentable data by the end of the program and contribute to the scientific community. I also look forward to networking with fellow SPUR-LABS students and faculty. In my time at UCLA, I have realized that research is all but a solo act. It is a cooperative endeavor, and being in the program will provide a collaborative and supportive environment for me to succeed. Ideally, I would like to have at least one paper published during my undergraduate career. C.S. Lewis once said, “Experience: the most brutal of teachers. But you learn, my God, do you learn.” Such experiences, especially SPUR-LABS will hopefully aid my journey to graduate school and my pursuit of a Ph.D. and work in academia and work alongside of the professors and mentors I have today.

As a transfer junior attending the University of Illinois at Urbana – Champaign, I am more than excited to seek for and to be a part of the research team. All the classes I had in my previous college, which is Green River College, a two-year college located in Washington, are non-research based classes, and there were no research opportunities available for students; therefore, I cannot stand to let myself blend into research coursework at the University of Illinois. I found the Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program, and I believe this would be an excellent opportunity for me to start building my research experiences at the University. By looking through the graduate mentors’ descriptions, I am amazed by all the works they have made. All of them are fascinating and intriguing to me. Nevertheless, I am drawn to these three topics the most; they consecutively are Rekha Balachandran’s, Kim Drager’s and Aseel Addawood’s.

In the early years of biotechnology, amateur biotechnologists, had no idea their ideas would snowball into incredible modern discoveries. Early discoveries included the processes of fermentation, pasteurization, and zymotechnology. The products of these processes are wine, cheese, and beer; all of which contributed significantly to the gross national product of their respective countries. However, it wasn’t until the discovery of the structure of DNA by Watson and Crick in 1953, that genetics and biotechnology would be linked together to explain so many of these discoveries.
I am aware that graduate study demands a good knowledge of fundamentals, a capacity for hard-work and creative thinking. I feel the American method of education is closer to my ideal. I would therefore be very thankful if I am offered a beneficial association with your esteemed university. Finally I take this opportunity to thank you for enabling me to express myself and I eagerly look forward to be part of your prestigious University.
The myriad mysteries of science can be unraveled by the emerging technologies including Biotechnology. Science has always been my interest and forte thus, the choice of Biotechnology as my academic option was the ideal decision. I had prepared for the highly competitive entrance exam AIET to get admission into the integrated Masters Degree in Biotechnology and Bioinformatics at Dr. D.Y. Patil University and secured 87th all over India rank and was proud to gain admission to this venerated university. The academic curriculum has introduced me to amazing subjects like ‘Microbiology’, ‘Molecular Biology’, ‘Biochemistry’, ‘Genetics’ and ‘Industrial Biotechnology’. Although many seminal biological events have been explained in theory during the past century, the technology to harness their potential for benefiting humankind has only been possible during the past few decades. This is testament to the great improvements in biotechnologies and I am glad to be a part of this grand scientific experience.
