Art and Education: My Path to MAT Program

I am applying to the MAT program in Art & Design because I want to give back to students. I want to challenge students to think about art in conceptual ways, as well exploring problem solving through art making. I always had a hard time in school, but my teachers were always there to support and challenge me. My best memories come from time spent talking and working with educators from as far back as I can remember. I did not always know I wanted to be an artist, but I always knew I wanted to be a teacher. Growing up I did not have a lot of access to art education at school. I have though spent time teaching children how to rock climb during summer camps, and on a daily basis while working at a gym in Las Vegas, NV. I was about 17 at the time and it’s when I realized that I really enjoy working with children, and I feel like I connect with them in a way I wasn’t able to connect with people who were older. This ability to listen and connect with children I believe is one of my strengths on my road to becoming an art educator. I truly like children, and want to see them grow to their highest potential. I hope to work with as many materials as possible, and read as many books I can get my hands on. I want to be the strongest artist I can be if I do get the opportunity to come to Vermont in the summer and study to receive my MAT in Art & Design. It would be a true privilege to be apart of the second class in a new developing program. It would also be an amazing opportunity to be working on my MAT at Vermont College of Fine arts as well as finishing my BFA at Cornish, and a challenge that I am excited and ready to take on.
