The study entailed an explicit investigation of the amount of lying that occurred among college students, both male and female. The diary study of lying ascertained that of the 77 students interviewed each lied at least twice a day. Participants in the study said that they did not actually plan to lie. They also neither took the lies seriously, nor did they worry about being caught.

The intent of this paper is to examine the notion of lying as a common norm in the contemporary society. It is evident that lying is occurring in almost all social discourses. The studies confirm that lying occurs as a form of self-presentation, impression and as a device for convincing. This implies that lying is usually designed to reveal a false impression about the speaker, though at times it might be difficult for the listener to discern the lies.

According to Mets (1989), reality and truth are at times unkind and painful. As a result, most people opt for lying in their social discourses. The participants in this study described lying as a daily occurrence which should never be considered as an unusual occurrence.

Moreover, in the field of ethics, lying is depicted as a selfish action that is intended to achieve individual goals. Though this assertion may be credible and authentic, I presume that lies are often told to gain personality issues such self-esteem, love and respect in the society. This depicts that lies are often told to minimize rivalry among people and tensions between people.
