Born from Cronus his father and Rhea his mother Zeus was the sixth son of the two. After Cronus ate his first five children Rhea gathered the strength to save her next child which was Zeus. Rhea tricked Cronus in to eating a stone by rapping it up in a swaddle of cloths instead of her new born; she sent her child to the island of Crete to Mt. Dikte where he was raised by a goatee. As Zeus matured to a young adult he became strong and made his father Cronus throw his siblings up. His five sibling concluded of Demeter, Hestia, Hera, Hades, and Poseidon. As the sky god Zeus acquired powers, responsibilities, and other perks; powers that included his weapons the lightning bolt, and the power to morph into man and animal, his reasonability to look over man enabled him to observe people in time of war and in their most personal of times. As a sky god Zeus was expected enrich the mortal chain; that lead him to have many loves and affairs.

The story of Mnemosyne is that of a love story with were Zeus sleeps with Mnemosyne for nine consecutive days and conceive the nine muses: the goddess who would inspire and promote in the areas of art, music and sciences. Clio the muse of history, Euterpe discover of musical instruments, Melpomene protector of traded, Thalia protector of comedy, Terpsichore invented and watch over dance, Erato saw over love and poetry, Polymnia invented geometry and grammar, Ourania protected the stars and Calliope was muse of justice and
There is no doubt in mythology that the king of gods, Zeus, is the most supreme and powerful, ruling the sky. He controls the thunderbolt, a symbol of power feared by both gods and mortals. The Greeks and Romans honored Zeus above all other gods. He is without mistake, the god of all gods. Their stories of Zeus are plenty; his designs have molded mythology from his birth. Zeus' victory in outwitting his intelligent wife, Metis, by swallowing her pregnant, was the gateway used by the Greeks and Romans to show Zeus as the greatest god to come since his father and grandfather. However, as the stories of the gods and goddesses unfold, the Greeks and Roman's interpretation of Zeus' characteristics are different. Zeus is always upheld as the king of gods, but his other personal attributes to his godly rein are conflicting. Zeus' characteristics of fearfulness of female deities, cunningness and use of trickery, and lust in Ovid's Metamorphoses compared to the Theogony are opposed due to Hesiod's true respect of Zeus versus Ovid's lack of respect of Jupiter in Roman mythology.
In Othello, Shakespeare tests the idea as to what romantic love is, and where it can withstand the test of time and exist without failing. Seeing the relationship between Desdemona and Othello, the play appears to say that marriage based on an innocent romantic love is bound to fail. Shakespeare seems cynical about the survival and endurance of a true type of love, however Othello and Desdemona are portrayed in the play as the two greatest innocents that ever were. The two appear to love one another romantically at first, but this romantic love couldn’t have hoped to have last without a basis of communication and understanding from both sides. Othello knows only about war and battle, that’s what he’s good at but not so much in anything else. Desdemona is little more than a girl; she isn’t very experienced in the ways of the world and has a naïve nature to her. She is taken in by Othello's war stories and his mysteriousness and is swept off her feet but she doesn’t really know him. The reason this spirals out so quickly and ends in tragedy is because there is no foundation for a relat...
In the Symposium, a most interesting view on love and soul mates are provided by one of the characters, Aristophanes. In the speech of Aristophanes, he says that there is basically a type of love that connects people. Aristophanes begins his description of love by telling the tale of how love began. He presents the tale of three sexes: male, female, and a combination of both. These three distinct sexes represented one’s soul. These souls split in half, creating a mirror image of each one of them. Aristophanes describes love as the search for the other half of your soul in this quote: “When a man’s natural form was split in two, each half went round looking for its other half. They put their arms around one another, and embraced each other, in their desire to grow together again. Aristophanes theme is the power of Eros and how not to abuse it.
The great rooted bed in the Odyssey symbolizes the strength of Odysseus and Penelope marriage and the bond they have between. The bed has withstood everything thrown at it as did Odysseus and Penelope. Their marriage is strong like an olive tree. The olive tree is also a symbol of Athena the goddess of wisdom and peace. Since Odysseus had carved their bed from the Olive tree when they were first married and has built their castle around the bed. He also carved their secret sign into the bed. “There’s our secret sign, I tell you, our life story!’’ (Book 23,463. 226). So if one would go away they would know it each other by this sign he made at the beginning of their marriage. “does the
In the beginning, it all started with the gods and goddesses Cronus (God of the Sky) and Rhea (Goddess of the Earth). They met and got married. While they were married they produced six offspring. These offspring would turn out to be some of the most famous in mythology. The offspring consisted of Hestia, Hades, Poseidon, Demeter, Hera, and of course, the famous Zeus. Poseidon was the oldest son to be born from these two. Unfortunately when the offspring were born Cronus devoured most, even though Rhea tried many times to keep that from happening. Finally when Zeus was born she tricked Cronus into thinking it was his own son, when handed to him, and he eat him like all the others. But after doing so, Rhea told Cronus that she had given him a stone wrapped up in a blanket. Zeus later overthrew his father and released all of his other kin. After overthrowing Cronus, Zeus took over the ruler of the kingdom. With him taking the thrown on Mt. Olympus, he chose Hades to rule the underworld and Poseidon to look after the sea and land. Poseidon was a very powerful god and ruled with fury. He was made the god of waters in general and of the sea in particular (1). He is an equal in dignity to Zeus but not in power. This is important because it does not allow Poseidon to question his br...
Zeus, most likely the most renowned god of all gods, the mighty god of lightning has taken part in some of the most widely known myths of all times. Zeus has taken part in many Greek and Roman myths alike, either as Zeus or as his Roman counterpart of Jupiter. Unlike most gods in mythology though, Zeus is the main character in almost all of the myths he is mentioned in. Whether the myth is about his epic clash against the Titans, his fight against the Giants or even about his extramarital affairs, Zeus always seems to come out of these conflicts unaffected and triumphant. When examining Zeus’ character though, it is important to note that Zeus is a god that exhibits human characteristics throughout most of his myths. Growth is one of the many human attributes that Zeus portrays in many of his myths.
People idolized these beings and built stunning life-like sculptures of them. Zeus was the most important of all the Greek gods and also king of Mount Olympus. He became a king after overthrowing his father, who was a titan and feared that his children would become more powerful than him. He is very well known for being deceiving, and a trickster.
As I said before, Zeus is the father of all gods and humans. He represents the idea of an independent moral code that all humans and immortals must obey. If any god or mortal did not follow this moral code, Zeus would enforce justice and watch over the punishment of the wrongdoers (Cunningham and Reich 33). Although Zeus is known for representing a moral code, Zeus’ behavior was far from moral. “Zeus was subject to pleasure, pain, grief, and anger, but he was most susceptible to the power of Eros – love, which often got the objects of his desire in a lot of trouble with his wife, Hera. Zeus wa...
There are many essential emotions that form the building blocks of our lives. These emotions help to shape the people that we are. These feelings are emotional necessities to ultimately keep us happy. No piece of literature these feelings more evident than the Odyssey by Homer. Throughout the course of this book there is one major emotional theme: love.
Throughout the story The Odyssey there are many themes that represent major parts of the story. The main theme that stood out to me is love which includes loyalty. “Love is a profoundly tender, passionate affection for another person; a feeling of warm personal attachment or deep affection, as for a parent, child, or friend; or a sexual passion or desire” (dictionary.com). “Loyalty is defined in the Webster's dictionary as faithfulness or devotion to a person, a cause or a duty” (Webster’s dictionary). Through these definitions, it can be expressed that loyalty and love are major themes in Homer's epic, "The Odyssey". Love and loyalty shows relationships that are between two people. The few relationships that represents love and loyalty is between husband and wife Odysseus and Penelope and also between father and son Odysseus and Telemachus. These relationships shows more than just love and loyalty though, their relationships also shows compassion, sympathy and the need to be in each one another’s lives.
Greek mythology has been around for many years and it is believed to be of great importance since it gives meaning to everything in the world today. A muse, for instance, is very popular in Greek Mythology. A muse is usually a woman who is an inspiration to others. The nine muses in Greek Mythology were the daughters of the Lord of Gods, Zeus and Goddess of Memory, Mnemosyne. Zeus had mystified Mnemosyne and he slept with her for nine consecutive days and the result of that were his nine daughters (Hughes). They were merely known as the immortal goddesses of arts and sciences. Each of the muses portrayed a different aspect of nature and each of these areas were deemed important because they inspired musicians and writers. Of all the muses,
Athena had one of the strangest births of any of the gods. Out of the many gods and goddesses, who lived atop mount Olympus, Zeus reigned above them all. He was the most powerful and strongest of all the gods and goddesses, even if you combined all of their attributes together, they still were no match for Zeus and his dominance, It is no surprise that a god this great should need no woman to bear offspring at the level of the gods. Zeus was told by mother earth and father sky that him, and his wife metis would bare children, which would jeopardize his position as ruler of everything. With this foretold conclusion, Zeus decided to swallow Metis who was about to give birth, and in so gaining her intelligence and wisdom. It is said however, that the result of metis being eaten were Zeus' tremendous headaches. Hephaestus had the solution to these headaches, an axe, the result of the axe and Zeus' skull was that Athena sprang out, fully-grown and Armored. Athena had been given a numerous amount of traits from her mother, more over; the main qualities were wisdom and justice.
Shakespeare’s play Othello reveals a lot about human nature and our definition of love. In this play the main romance is the uncommon live of Othello (a moor) and Desdemona (a socialite). The question of her loyal is brought up a lot as Iago tries to convince Othello that she is cheating on him. In reality it is not a question of her loyalty and love for Othello but it is Othello’s love for her. Othello cares more about himself than Desdemona and the love he does have is ultimately self-centered.
Cupid is a major symbol for Valentine’s Day. Simply because, he’s the god of love. Cupid was willing to do anything to make his mother, Venus, happy. She sent Cupid out on a mission to make her arch rival fall in love with the ugliest living thing ever. Unfortunately, this backfired on Venus and Cupid became his own victim.
Zeus is the god of law, justice, morals, thunder, lightning, and rain. It was his job to oversee and make sure laws were being kept. He was worshipped originally as a weather god. He was depicted as a middle-aged man with a youthful appearance; he was regale and was almost always shown ready to throw a lightning bolt (pantheon/zeus).
