Long Beach Officials and the city’s paid firefighters have reached an agreement to minimize the layoffs. They can move on and get qualified and paid paramedics and volunteers. Long Beach International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) have agreed to drop several lawsuits against the city in exchange for protection of the 18 currently paid firefighters. City officials wanted to downsize the department to 12 paid firefighters and add 12 paid paramedics. The city expected to $2 million with a downsized fire department. The fire department argued this would reduce the overall number of immediate responders and jeopardize public safety.
