In his article, “Live and Learn : Why We have College” published on June 6, 2016, by author and professor of several public and Ivy league universities, Louis Menand writes an article about college and why we have college. Menand claims that society wants to know the intelligent people as early as possible in order to figure out what career suits them that would make use of their talents to its maximum (Menand). In support to his statement, he points out that, “College is a process that is sufficiently multifaceted and fine-grained to do this” (Menand). Menand develops his argument by saying that, college is like a four year test for a student. The student has to do his responsibilities that are required from them to do depending on their subjects. Even if a student is smart in the IQ sense of things, if the student is lazy then it will show up in their bad grades. Not only that, college also separates the math type of people and the poetry type of people which prefer the english side of things. With what the college is doing, students attain their G.P.A which is used by schools and workplaces to see if the student is capable of working within their company. Hence, it’s important that students take their tests. First of all, Menand’s second theory is based on democratic thought. On the second theory’s perspective, Menand states that “Education is about personal and intellectual growth, not about winning some race to the top”. Menand supports his statement by mentioning that, higher education is the way to improve and live a better life. Even though people say that Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg dropped out in college only to achieve a better life, one must question themselves, are they Bill Gates or Mark Zuckerberg to be able to do
