Mythical creatures were a big hit during the Gothic era with the science fiction that the literature included. People were intrigued with the science fiction because it was unusual for the time period. The monsters and events that took place attracted attention because it was something different from the romance and wars that books were usually written about. The science fiction allowed for people to have more vivid imaginations and to think outside the norm. Without the dramatic scenes and characters, the gothic era would not be as successful as it was. Today, science fiction continues to be popular. Science fiction allows for writers to write about anything that they can think of; the options are endless. The readers fantasize, create their own world, and get lost in their thoughts. The existence of the unexplainable keeps readers guessing and not being able to predict what is going to happen because in fantasy and science fiction, anything is possible (Lake 2008.).
Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is a perfect example of what gothic literature is, not only because of the science fiction, but also because of the many other literary elements that is found within the unique genre. She uses imagery throughout her book to enhance the image for the reader. Her imagery conjures images that are graphic and emphasizes the landscapes, so it is easy for the reader to understand what she sees. The descriptive imagery is powerful and causes frightening images; “ . . .skin scarcely cover(ing) the work of muscles and arteries beneath," (Shelley pg. 57). ...uses from readers throughout generations. Not only did it create its own drama, but it also created its own period and writing style. It has given the ability to let readers free their minds and think about the story for themselves while the author helps steer them along. Books from the Gothic era have been recreated many times and are still being viewed today. Many of Shelley's works have been recreated including Frankenstein. Gothic literature has had an impact on many stories through the ages and still impacts the media today. Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Twilight all have common themes of Gothic literature. No matter what the time period, people enjoy the terror and fantasy that Gothic literature has created. Gothic literature has had a huge impact on the past and present works of literature and will continue to impact the literary works of the future.
