Lincoln

The movies I decided to watch and write about is Lincoln, which is directed by Steven Spielberg. This movie is based on the life of Abraham Lincoln and his efforts to pass the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution. Lincoln would have to be the primary leader of this film because he went against what many others thought was right to have the Thirteenth Amendment passed, which would abolished slavery completely. In 1864, the US was in the middle of the Civil War and slavery was much a part of everyday Southern life. Lincoln became a leader by fighting for the all people to be treated equally. The Secretary of state was basically bribing the representatives to vote alongside Lincoln; but he kept gaining and losing votes. People did not want to follow Lincoln, especially the southern states because it would disrupt their way of life. All the southern states knew was slavery, it was their livelihood and by following Lincoln they would be giving up everything they knew about life. I think if Lincoln was my leader in 1864, I probably would not have wanted to follow him. If Lincoln was my leader in 2016, I would want to follow him. Times have changed so much over the 100 plus years, back then I probably would have been scared of the repercussions of following Lincoln. In the end Lincoln was shot for standing up for what he believed in, I would be afraid the same thing would happen to me. He was such an admirable man and wanted what was best for everyone because he saw the value in all people no matter their color of skin. Lincoln was very intelligent from a very young age and he has extremely good social skills. In the movie it stated everyone loved him several times and he seemed to be very confident in his decisions and actions. These are all characteristics of The Great Man Theory and the theory I see Lincoln least associated with is the Power Approach to Theory. I do not believe Lincoln’s actions were power driven. To him others were his equal and he wanted what was best for
