How Does Leon Garfield structure the novel ‘Smith’ to keep the reader interested? Leon Garfield uses cliffhangers and other techniques to draw the reader into the world that Smith lives in. I am going to explain how the author uses a variety of emotions and moods. As well as that, I am going to discuss how the author links social history with the plot. Then, I am going to clarify how well the ending resolves the readers’ questions. Finally, I am going to expose how the author uses elements of style to his advantage. The first point I will talk about is how the author uses a variety of emotions and moods such as humour and horror. “Quick,” whispered Miss Bridgit, handsome in her Tuesday best, “under my skirt, child.” This is humorous as Smith was escaping gaol at that time and you would never dream of escaping under someone’s skirt. This is also horror as the skirt will have been taken off a dead woman, and to think of wearing a dead woman’s clothes is ghastly and unthinkable. Also we are scared as Miss Bridgit could be caught and be punished severely for ...
Mariah Snow wrote, “We lose our names as we lose our youth, our beauty and our lives” (163). This quote from Lee Smiths novel On Agate Hill says a lot about Mariah and her own life. She had always been treated like a ‘second citizen’, as most women were in that time period, being that men held the power of most relationships, as well as in society in general, Mariah felt as though she had been pushed around a lot but could not even speak up. When women get married, they give up their last name, almost symbolizing that their individuality is completely gone. In Mariah’s case, once she got married to Dr. Snow, she lost her name; once she had babies she lost her youth; and she did not feel beautiful anymore because life’s stresses were taking toll, and she really did not love herself much at all.

The mood that occurred most in the book is vexing because the way people acted would make you vexed. For example when the jury had said tom robinson was guilty everyone knew he was innocent but he was still guilty so that would make you feel vexed. “A jury never looks at a defendant it has convicted, and when this jury came in, not one of them looked at Tom Robinson.”(Lee 282) That is one of many examples in the book where things make you extremely mad and it is usually racism that makes you vexed because it happens all throughout ...
The language the author uses is clear and concise with a level of complexity. The complexity comes from the words the author uses, and from the research he has consulted.
"The novel as a whole is a phenomenon multiform in style and variform, in speech and voice. In it the investigator is confronted with several heterogeneous stylistic unities, often located on different linguistic levels and subject to different stylistic controls." p 261

He also uses various forms of slangs and glossary which contained the meanings of some of the slangs used and some strange terminologies. However, it is recommended that the very frequent use of slangs should be reduced as it gives a picture of obscenity and vulgarity to readers :evil2: . He also attempts to use the simplest forms of language to communicate but this wasn’t a totally achievable success as the story while focusing on the main character, suffered a great disconnect such that, even with full concentration, one would still get confused and be required to reread past chapters all over again :? :? :? , thereby arousing a lack of interest in continuing the story. A few typographical errors also

Have you ever wondered why people have certain reactions? I chose chapter eight on emotions for my reflection paper because emotions are something that everyone has and feels, yet cannot always explain or react to in the way you would expect. Personally, I have never been great at responding to emotions in a way that I would not regret in the future. Thus, naturally being drawn to this chapter as a way to expand my knowledge on how to react to things more positively. I also wanted to learn why I feel a certain way after events that would not affect most people and be reassured about my feelings. Opposite to that, it is nice to see that, while not always productive, others have the same reaction habits. Overall, emotions are a complicated
