The book I am reading, laughing at my nightmare by Shane Burcaw, shows three different types of conflict: man vs self, man vs society, and man vs man. Shane, the main character, and author of laughing at my nightmare, deals with struggles with himself and others. Man vs self is defined as an internal conflict that a character overcomes making he/she make their own choices. Man vs society, an external conflict, is where a character strongly believes against a majority of a community or surroundings and decides to act upon it. In other words, man vs society is one against many. Lastly, man vs man is an external conflict with another character. For starters, man vs self is a very common conflict that appears in my book. Shane, who was diagnosed with a disease at a young age, faces some challenges in his life. At first, he struggled with his disability and struggled to meet new people. However, Shane took action and decided that he could do so much more in life. Shane would overcome his challenges and would allow himself to do greater things. Another book that has a man vs self conflict is Catching Fire, the second book of The Hunger Game series, by Suzanne Collins. The protagonist, Katniss Everdeen, struggles with internal conflicts with her role in the rebellion and her own guilt (enotes). …show more content…

With Shane’s disability, he is often overlooked and seen as an outcast. Shane was often excluded by others at school because he was different. In his case, people would judge him by his looks without giving him a chance. He was often left alone while others would pair up with anyone else but Shane. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain characterizes man vs society very well. Huckleberry struggles with the opposition of society and doesn’t want to be like the others. He also has a problem on how his friend, who is African American, is treated by others
