The use of language can be seen to correlate with the views of society. The words used to describe groups and the tone associated is a hindrance to the acceptance of all the ways people are grouped. Prejudice can be stereotypes or terms used that society did not first recognize as prejudice. The words spoken can have a greater impact than once believed and as the ability to vocalize these words can be long lasting through social media and affect many the more prejudice can have an impact. Women are grouped with unwanted characteristics. The inability to get outside society beliefs does not only affect a women psychologically but also prevents her from achievements within society and personal goals. Many people in the work force view women as, “the nurturers and the supporters” rather than as a coworker (Meece 3). For some positions these preposition beliefs can make people believe that women are, “too soft” for a job whether that is because of making tough decision or the type of work is seen as being tough (Meece 5). The idea of woman being too soft makes employers view them as not as qualified as a man because of the association of certain language with gender. This type of discrimination can cause for potential money loss and being promoted within a business. The power of language is more influential than one may perceive the choice of one word can affect the future of many others not just themselves. Although, “Many women who are still in the work force were hesitant to speak out publicly for fear of making matters worse or of jeopardizing their careers” since women are often scrutinized more on what they say(Meece 3). The language used against women causes a difficulty for women to voice the injustice that occurred.
