Racism in the United States made it very tough on multiple races. It was hard for people that weren’t white to live out there dreams or to make a living. Racism had an affect politically and in society. There were three races that dealt with racism. These races were African Americans, Native Americans, and Asian Americans. When people hear the world racism they immediately think African Americans and slavery. Although blacks probably had it a lot worse then most races there were still some other races that were not treated equally. Racism has always been around and it is still around today. It is something that will never go away. After the Civil War, racism in the south rose higher than it ever had before. The south had lost the civil war. The southerners were very desperate and knew that things were going to change. The north had won and had granted the slaves to be free. There was no more slavery, so they thought. This hurt the south because the south really depended on slaves. The slaves were a major reason why the south was doing so well. They got the work done for the whites. Not all slaves were treated terribly, most of the time though it wasn’t very good. The southerners had built up this hatred towards everyone especially the North and African Americans. In order for the Southerners to be superior again they had to do something about the “Free Slaves”. What eventually came along was know as the Black Codes. The Black Codes were laws passed by the confederacy, which replaced social controls of slavery. They were passed right after the civil war. The south passed these laws so that they could be supreme again. It looked like the laws were designed to affect all races but it overpowered the African Americans. The Black Cod... ... middle of paper ... ...upreme Court ruling upheld Louisiana’s right to segregate railway cars. The court said that the fourteenth amendment to the United States constitution mandated politically equality not social equality. The Jim Crow laws would eventually lead to segregation in schools, libraries, and parks. Racism was at an all time high and not looking good for African American’s. Especially since the Klu Klux Klan was on the rise. The KKK was a terrorist group who targeted former slaves, carpetbaggers, and scalawags. The KKK feared a lot of people and so they should have. Jim crow would eventually come to an end in the mid twenty century. Civil Rights movements and Brown v. Board of Education played a heavy role in putting a stop to the Jim Crow laws. During this time before racism had so called “ended”, African Americans were always reminded that they were second-class citizens.
